Bill Nye “The Science Guy”: Creationism Is Not Appropriate For Children

One week after this video was released, and it’s already got over 3 Million views and is making the headline news on TV stations around the US.

Bill Nye, the Science Guy, had the following to say:

Denial of evolution is unique to the United States. I mean, we’re the world’s most advanced technological — I mean, you could say Japan — but generally, the United States is where most of the innovations still happens. People still move to the United States. And that’s largely because of the intellectual capital we have, the general understanding of science. When you have a portion of the population that doesn’t believe in [evolution], it holds everybody back, really.

I say to the grownups, if you want to deny evolution and live in your world, in your world that’s completely inconsistent with everything we observe in the universe, that’s fine, but don’t make your kids do it because we need them. We need scientifically literate voters and taxpayers for the future. We need people that can — we need engineers that can build stuff, solve problems.

So, what do you think? Are any there any creationist believing engineers or scientists out there who are offended by Bill’s assertion that the evolution guided by God is inconsistent with being able to build stuff or solve problems? Or is he just plain old RIGHT! And parents should be ashamed if they teach children to believe in something with no basis in scientific fact?

Well, Well dear Bill, You think that we are not all that advanced if we don’t believe in evolution and we are holding everybody back? Are you kidding? Believers who believe in the bible and who ARE SCIENTISTS can create and innovate many things, and let’s not forget those jews who were magnificent in their field as Dr. Saulk. You think we as christians are backward and hold every back? You’ve got your head on backwards! We have the extra information that you scientists don’t have! Not only do we have the world’s research and knowledge, we have all that’s in the Bible! And by the way Bill, those are our children, NOT yours to teach! If we want to teach our children about Jesus WE WILL! And they will be better equipped to handle things in life than you can! Just cause you are evolutionary minded and an obvious athiest, don’t get such a high minded arrogant attitude that you can’t trust Jesus and not be a scientist that’s credible at the same time!

And also, the Earth is NOT millions of years old! It is only close to 7,000 years old at the most!
And there was a world flood that messes up your whole theory of classified strata of the earth that that scientists like you believe in millions of years of laid out layers of ages in the Earth’s crust!
The trouble is you DO NOT believe in God’s word and you guys come up with faulty information!
You and the other scientists believe in fairy tales made up by educated idiots!

It says in Romans 1:18-22 “But God shows his anger from heaven against all sinful ,evil men who push away the truth from them. For the truth about God is known to them instinctively, God has put this knowledge in their hearts. Since earliest times men have seen the earth and sky and all God made, and have known of his existance and great eternal power. So they will have no excuse when they stand before God at judgement day. Yes, they knew about him alright, but they wouldn’t admit it or worship him or thank him for all his daily care. and after a while they began to think up silly ideas of what God was like and what he wanted them to do. The result was that their foolish minds became dark and confused. Claiming themselves to be wise without God, they became utter fools instead.”

  2. Thinker says

Scientific theories are disproved on a regular basis. How many times have you heard the results of the latest “study” directly contradicting a similar study from a year prior? Are eggs good for us or not? Is rigorous cardiovascular exercise beneficial or harmful? Evolution will never be proved; it will only be the most plausible explanation until a better hypothesis comes along.

In any case, many prominent scientists have regularly posited that the ultimate “stuff” of life will never be elucidated, because that very essence is not measurable. Who knows God would, by definition, have to BE God. That is why faith is so important. Faith gives man the opportunity to let go of a neurotic desire to “control” everything around him.

  3. Sam says

I’m probably gonna catch a lot of flak for this, but neither creationism nor evolution is provable. It bothers me when people, whether they claim to come from a position of faith or of reason, refuse to acknowledge that the scientific method requires observation, hypothesizing, and experimentation. There is no way to experiment to prove things were created or evolved, and there is no one alive who observed creation or evolution (however long ago one thinks it happened). We’re missing two out the three criteria for verifying something scientifically. There are hard liners on both sides of the origins debate who think their opposition is made up of idiots. I loved Bill Nye growing up, but I think he has undermined the reason of science to which he purports to adhere.

    • Ian N says

Get over it. Nothing in science is provably correct. Only in mathematics can something be proved correct. Everything else is a theory which explains the observed facts known so far, or stands up as the currently best explanation until a fact turns up that it can’t explain, or someone comes up with a theory which better explains the facts.

Creationism has long been supplanted by evolution, because evolution explains observations that creationism cannot.
