You Can Now Mute Users on Twitter

If for any reason you’ve ever wanted to follow somebody on Twitter, but would prefer not to see their Tweets and Retweets appear in your home timeline, you will be pleased to hear that the social network has today announced the roll-out of a new mute feature that allows you to do exactly that.

The new mute option is available to anybody using the official Twitter apps for iPhone and Android, or the web version.

Providing it has already rolled out for your account, there are two ways to enable it. You can either select the “More” option from a user’s Tweet and choose “Mute @username”, or you can select the gear icon from the user’s profile and again choose “Mute @username”.

Importantly, the muted user won’t know that you have muted them, and they will still be able to reply to, favourite, or retweet your Tweets. In addition to removing their Tweets, you will also stop receiving push or SMS notifications from them too.

Personally, I’m going to be muting the accounts of companies that I occasionally need to send direct messages to for support reasons – and therefore need to be following them, but would prefer not to see their marketing messages.

Will you be using this feature? Let us know what you think about it by leaving a comment below, on the usual social platforms (please don’t mute us though), or over on our forums.
