Good point Sam, like most new tech, it is pricey. But like getting the right tool, if it fits your purpose well, it can save you money. Here's how the Volt does that. Looking at cost of ownership instead of initial price, Volt owners can, after 5.5 years of ownership, have total vehicle expenses that are less than someone who buys a $23,000 gas burning only car. A couple of studies have concluded this, so it's likely Googlable, if that's really a verb.

You do realize the battery on the Volt is warranted for 8 years. The Volt only uses 65% of it's capacity and as it ages it use a higher percentage.

Just so you know, GM actually subsidizes the cost of the battery. They knew that 8 grand would be a deterrent for some folks. So if you do have a problem that isn't covered under warranty for some reason, the cost of the battery is actually only $3k. Which is right in line with getting your transmission replaced or something like that on a normal car.

Also, they specifically allow only 65% of the battery to be used for driving the vehicle. This is because charging in the middle of the battery (percentage-wise) is easier than at the ends. So it increases battery life dramatically. With the 8 year, 100k mile warranty on the battery, you're protected for quite a while. Let's pretend worst case scenario and the battery completely fails and has to be replaced every 100k miles. With the low cost regular maintenance that is normally associated with electric vehicles, you won't be too bad off if you're dumping 3k into it every 100k miles. In reality, of course, it won't be nearly that much. And in the next 5-10 years, GM is betting that battery technology is going to become much cheaper. So it might even become cheaper than the 3k subsidized price.

Battery concerns are one of the last things that should be stopping you from buying a car like this. As an owner, I'm not worried. And haven't been given a reason to be. I personally feel that I'm better protected financially than someone who owns a gas-only vehicle that has many more moving parts that could catastrophically fail in a very expensive manner.

It's an interesting car and I was looking at it very closely until I found out the price tag. I currently drive a mini that cost me 27k, not a cheap car for a subcompact, but when I priced out an equivalently packaged volt, the price was almost 20K more then my mini. When I went to a dealer to see their cars in inventory I didn't see anything under 44. I do understand this is a new, unique car and with anything new you're going to pay for it, but if you're trying to be green, save on gas or think you're going to save money in any way by buying this car I'd say a big no, unless you're moving down to this from a 50K plus luxury or sports car.
If you're buying because you like the geek factor and have cash burning a hole in your pocket then awesome.

Owned a Volt for almost 6 months now. Flat out the best car I ever had. The body will fall apart before the battery and a top notch warranty should alleviate any fears. Go to gm-volt.com to learn about a true engineering marvel that will save you $$$.
