- Federal Aviation Administration has approved a test flight on 787 test aircraft ZA005
- Conditional on 5 FAA requirements:
*Pre-flight inspection must show no signs of damage to batteries or cables
*Pre-flight will also check for error messages that would indicate battery problems
* flight crew must continiously monitor for battery error messages and land immediately if there’s an issue
* crew must inspect the smoke barriers and insulation to make sure they meet regulations
* Test flights only carry personnel essential to the test and operation of the aircraft
- Flights would be to collect data on the battery system and test potential fixes
- this is not a return to operational flight.
- If it a problem if found, it would have to be thoroughly tested, manufactured, and then installed on the operational fleet
- Grounding in third week, could be several weeks if not months before the jet is approved to return to commercial flights
