McIntosh MXA60 – Luxury Audio for $7,500

Why would you (or anyone) want to drop $7,500 on an audio system? John P. goes over some background on McIntosh and why the MXA60 is a very special piece of equipment.

What Makes the Difference Between Audio Systems?

Distortion is a big issue in audio. This is a very important distinction when comparing a system like the MXA60 to the $500 systems you might buy at a local store.

So Choice… If You Have the Means

This is clearly not the sound system for everyone, or even most people. But, if audio quality is VERY important to you, and you’re comfortable with making an investment like this, knowing the system will perform amazingly and last forever, it’s hard to do better than the MXA60.

The C-32 and MC302 were my favorite Mac pair, lots of control with the pre-amp and 300 watts per channel from the 302 made for a hefty amount of warm soulful sound reproduction to deliver precisely what I needed for my LPs, CDs, open reel & Laser Disc. I’ve not heard the MXA60 yet, I’m kind of scared to. Thanks for the excellent review John, you are a classic CNN style commentator… “B”

I’ll take that “B” Bruce! This was my first long-form product review ever! :-) And to be honest, it was a hard one because how the heck to you review a product like this?

I’ll get better, and suggestions for improvement are always welcome.

      Cheers,

      John P.

Hay John. The way you presented your review on the Mac, sitting there in a nice sute, clean shaven, calm and relaxed in a non-pushy manor, makes me (the viewer) relaxed and feel better about the product or subject your talking about. The other fellow below, seems not to recognize the fact you presented a review, and NOT a sales pitch. As for the *work* you put into the review, the writing, that’s the way a succful operation becomes a classic menu for history books. I find the sucuss in *my* industry comes from doing the research and all the customer followup work, this is what has them come back to me and recommend me to friends and other industry comrads. But may I say again, great review, and so far I don’t see a need for change… “B”

  2. That was SO an ad. It didn’t come across as anything but biased. I have no doubt that that McIntosh MXA60 is an amazing system… but it wreaked of bias and paid review… Gotta say I’m kinda disappointed… :(

    • Cali Lewis says:

You try it out and find something bad to say about it… ;-)

As John said, it is NOT a paid endorsement or advertisement. When we find a product we love, we want to share that with you. Sorry it didn’t make you happy, but rest assured, we would tell you if there was money being exchanged!

    • John P. says:

      Tim,

Here is a $150 product that I also highly recommended. No one accused me of taking a bribe for that one. ;-)

      So three comments:

      1. I can understand a little skepticism, but I can assure you that neither McIntosh, nor any other vendor, has enough money to buy a positive review from me or the rest of the GeekBeat staff (who work for me). And frankly, it’s insulting that I started out by telling you that McIntosh did not pay us for this, and yet here we are revisiting that topic.
      2. Why is it so hard to believe that I (and everyone else in the office) would love this system? It cost $7,500! For that kind of money, wouldn’t you expect it to be amazing?
      3. We receive plenty of products for review that never receive any coverage. This is because we see no reason to share things with the audience that we don’t like. Why would we waste your time with that? So don’t confuse our enthusiasm for the products that do get covered with bias.

This review was one of the most difficult we’ve ever tackled. Because as geeks we tend to get wrapped up in specs and speeds. But McIntosh is more than that, so the review had to be different. I’m sorry if you didn’t like the format I chose, but I’m open to suggestions if you have better ideas about how we can showcase luxury products in the future.

Bottom line: since the time we put it in our office for review, it gets more attention, from staffers and visitors, than anything else we’ve ever had. And we get a lot of stuff…

      Cheers,

      John P.

  3. Mr. Jiggs says:

Now that you’ve finished the review John, you probably need to make room in the studio for the next test. I can help you out there. I think I have room for a McIntosh here… ;-)

    • John P. says:

That is a most generous offer Mr. Jiggs. I’ll keep it in mind. ;-)
