CEDIA 2011
Cali and John spent the last week at CEDIA 2011 (as you may have noticed from the last 25+ episodes!). Today they give some wrap-up thoughts on the products and trends they observed.
Installing Behind Walls with Magnepull
John’s favorite product at the show was the Magnepull, a tool to make installing things behind walls easier.
Giant Video Wall Screen
Cali’s favorite thing was a huge video wall, powered by six rear projectors from Digital Projection, with a screen provided by Stewart Filmscreen. For $300,000, it could be yours.

Hello Cali,
thank you, and your team, for this wrap up of the CEDIA 2011 out of Indianapolis.
My favorite one sofar is like Cali’s: the huge video wall, powered by six rear projectors from Digital Projection, with a screen provided by Stewart Filmscreen. Can’t afford it but it would be awesome to watch movies on such a screen.
Take care and greetings,
nick
I watch 3D on my LG with Sony PS3 and my Cable 3D channel
Here’s one of several problems for me besides the really dumb glasses. I (speaking for myself) always want the next cool gadget and new shiny thing, I’m always asking for that, I never asker for 3D. The industry is telling me I want it, but I don’t agree. The demand isn’t there and it never was. Even if it’s free, there will never be a time when me and the boys will cram into a room to watch football while wearing 3D glasses. It will NEVER happen. I have paid at the theater for a 3D movie, but not once have I, or anyone with me ever left the movie thinking, O my God, the 3d was incredible. Bottom line, the movie is great or it’s not, 3D has never made a bad movie better. And it never will.
P.S. The future of TV is, wireless everything, including power. Well integrated with everyone, and 4K2K- four times the resolution of 1080P. 3D is a flop, if you looked at a 3D picture next to 4K2K it would be game, set, match.
P.P.S. Love the show can’t get enough. I hope your voice returns soon.
Hey, I have nothing on 3D. I just wanted to say, though Cali’s voice was horse. I thought she sounded more professional and toned down. I love the happy go-lucky approach. However, it was a different side that I enjoyed!
Long time fan from before revisions3.
Cali, wishing your vocal cords a speedy recovery. About 3D; i’m one who will never watch 3D, due to my eyesight. I have very little vision in my right eye, so i will never be able to see a 3D picture, whether it’s at the movie theater or on tv. I wish that most of these companies that are trying to force 3D on us would realize that many people cannot, for one reason or another see 3D video of any kind. It’s disappointing to want to see a particular film or show, but can’t, because it is available only in 3D. Nice to see that you guys had fun, keep up the good work.
I don’t have 3D at home – but I will. I’m biding my time to allow the technology to mature – I want Full HD Passive 3D, which we should be getting with Z-Screen and the like. I blogged about it (a bit of a rant really): http://giz.lv/r6Bz0F
I love 3D and I’m already buying a lot of 3D Blu-ray discs to have the library when the tech I want is finally available. My current HDTV is a 61″ 1080p DLP I picked up in 2006 (to coincide with the release of the TiVo Series3), just a bit too early to be 3D capable. It still does the job well, so I’m content to wait for passive 3D tech to evolve and mature.
I’m already a 3D movie fan. Whenever I have the option of seeing a film in 2D or 3D I always go 3D. And if I can see it in 3D IMAX there’s no contest. The only hard choice is when I have 2D IMAX vs. 3D non-IMAX. Then it depends a bit on the film.

David – If you want to see a film in 2D when it is only shown in 3D in your area you can do it. Movie theaters use passive 3D glasses with polarized lenses. One lens allows ‘left’ and the other ‘right’. So get two pair of the glasses and move the lenses to make an all-left and an all-right pair. Both eyes will see the same image – so you’ll see 2D like a normal film. Most of the cheap RealD glasses theaters use these days pop apart without too much trouble.
Keith – Keep in mind that when we have 4K TVs we’ll have 4K 3D as well. They aren’t mutually exclusive. The larger the screen and the higher the resolution the better the 3D effect. People have made the same arguments about other technologies in the past, like surround sound. Surround sound, or widescreen, or even HD. None of those technologies will make a bad movie good, but they can enhance the experience of good content. 3D is the same way. When it is done well it is seamless, you don’t think about the fact you’re watching 3D, it just feels natural. If you’re noticing the 3D effects then it is gimmicky. That might work in a schlocky horror film or as a deliberate comedy gaff, but most 3D films try to avoid that kind of thing.
On the 3D subject. I have yet to see a film in 3D, but I have watched several sports events. A major minus when it comes to films is the 2D version of them has been adjusted and set-up to work in 3D.
One example. I saw the 2D version of The Green Hornet and several of the close-ups of characters had them in sharp focus, the background blurred and the camera panning slowly left or right. The obvious idea is to make the talking head stand out in 3D mode, but in 2D it just looks awkward.
However, on the plus side, many sporting events benefit from 3D. The big surprise is Golf. I’m just a casual golfing fan, but in 3D it looks amazing.
Big pitch sports such as Soccer, American Football, etc. work less well because the wide angle shot of the entire pitch does not have enough of a depth of field to work in 3D.
Would I invest in a 3D TV? Well Europe is still behind Japan and the US in terms of availability of 3D programming, so not for the next 12-18 months anyway.
I LOVE 3D!!! Please show more 3D gadgets. I take my 3D digital camera with me everywhere. It probably even gets more use than my iPad, because I take it hiking, sailing, mountain biking, etc, when I leave my iPad at home.
I use the fujifilm finepix real3d W3 to take pictures and videos and I use my nvidea 3D enabled 27″ monitor to watch the content at home. My monitor is an Acer HN274H and works for 3D and 2D.
A lot of people have bought the HTC EVO 3D cell phone on sprint… A lot of geeks LOVE 3D. I’m waiting to see what the new iPhone looks like before I choose between the two.
Thanks for all of your work!
