GeekBeat.TV #2 | Robot Lifeguards, Netbooks Getting Better, the AMOLED Invasion, Pet AT-AT

Share:

Robot Lifeguards
EMILY is a robot lifeguard. Her name is short for the much longer version, Emergency Integrated Lifesaving Lanyard. She senses movement underwater that’s indicative of distress and will “swim” to the person in danger of drowning.

Netbooks Getting Better
Toshiba’s new concept for the netbook market is looking awesome! It’s called the W100, and is a dual touch screen. They say there might not be many available when they are released.

The AMOLED Invasion
The Galaxy S is making the rounds to all the carriers. It’s heading to Sprint as the Epic 4G, to Verizon as the Fascinate, to US Cellular as the Galaxy S, to AT&T as the Captivate, and to TMobile as the Vibrant.

Pet AT-AT
And…for the most adorable video ever! I love how he shakes his little tail. The Pet AT-AT. There just isn’t anything more to say!

  2. Bryan says:

Just watch the first show on my ZuneHD, I loved it and glad to see you on Revision 3

  3. Bruce R. says:

I am wowed, is that really a word??? I will always remember the first of anything & this is like the birth of a legend in the tech pod cast world. I may sound a little dramatic, but what the hay. Excellent show Cali!!! I look forward to the next 800 ;-) be well, & get some sleep… Bruce R.

  4. marshall says:

    congrats on the new show.
my daughter loved this first episode.
i like the chapter stops, because I rewind so much…

  5. Josh Budde says:

Cali! Loved the first episode of GeekBeat! I am excited to see what you will bring to us in the future. As Corey said above, we can always look to you to bring us tech news, that every geek needs. :)

  6. Alan says:

It was good, but I think you still struggle to say GeekBeat a bit much. Seems forced, but it may just be the name.

  7. RobertMeta says:

All my favorite shows in one place, time for Revision3 to somehow steal Buzz Out Loud from CNET so I can have all my shows in one place.

  8. Logitack says:

good show. but is there a reason why it is only 5 minutes in length? you have tons of material to choose from so I would think you could fill a 30 minute time slot easily.

  9. subcorpus says:

    great first show …
    subscribed !!!

  10. Cali Lewis says:

    Thanks everyone!!

@Logitak Yes, there’s TONS of material to choose from. I spend my time upfront looking for the stuff I’m excited about, and care to talk about. 5 minutes seems to be the right length for the most amount of people to be able to consume and get an understanding of what’s out there quickly. I think for this style and it being video, 30 minutes would be overwhelming for a lot of people. Also, we have to consider file size! :)

  11. WOOT! Awesome format, the logo ROCKS and I love the bright, clean colors….oh, and the show and content ROCKS too! ;)

  12. phillberg says:

    Cali,
Loved the first episode! I think 5 mins is perfect, until you get a movie offer ;-) . Hope you get looked after better at revision 3:

  13. harzack says:

Well, I’m not as enthusiast as the other commenters… and here is why (only my opinion):
    - 5 minutes is in fact too long, I would prefer around 3 to 4 minutes
    - the commercial in the middle is a definitive turn off
    - too much moving around in front of the camera IMO
    - overall, I found that the text was lacking a bit of a spark, it’s hard to tell what exactly, maybe this is due to the fact that it’s a first episode?

  14. Cali Lewis says:

Totally understand the comments! A couple thoughts…

5 minutes is a flexible timeline. It’ll be anywhere between 3 and 6 minutes. Today was kind of long because I needed to thank everyone. :)

We’re still working on all the graphics and spicing everything up (but not too much), so you’ll see some improvements there.

In regards to the ad, I get when you’re used to one thing and it changes. I’d ask that everyone give it a try and see if it grows on you. I’m here to listen and understand where y’all are coming from, and also balance it with what has to be done on the back end.

    Keep the comments coming! :)

  15. Jerry says:

Oh no! I can’t see it on my iPad! I’ll fire up the mini 10 and watch. I am so happy you were able to start a new show.

  16. Cali Lewis says:

Which feed are you using? Small or Medium should work!

  17. Glad to see the show’s format has survived basically intact! I agree with harzack (above) regarding the too-much-moving-around, though. No need to get all crazy!

  18. RASTERMAN says:

I really enjoyed your first new show. Good job as usual Cali!

How often are you planning to post new episodes?

The content was interesting, the pace was good and the look and feel was clean but not antiseptic. It helps us to focus on what’s important… the products and of course who doesn’t enjoy your smile!?

My wife is Italian, so I’m used to the hands, but I can see how someone might see that as over exuberant.

Love the logo, who did it? Missed the credits at the end…

As always I enjoy a blooper when it’s available. The ad in the middle is not too distracting and a fact of life.

You could always offer an ad free version for those that want to make a donation up front, otherwise, a gal’s got to pay for her bacon somehow!

    Cheers!

    —RASTER

  19. Jerry says:

Love the show, about the first post, I was trying to watch it here. I am sure the feed will work when I get around to a sync.
    TTFN

  20. John P. says:

Unlike some of you guys I actually enjoyed the moving around. It felt more engaging to me by far as opposed to when you just sat still in one place and had the standard zoom in and out stuff.

I say keep experimenting with this new look. I don’t think anyone else is doing this, so it might take people a little time to get used to it. But I think once they do they’ll be wondering why everyone else just sits there while they do their shows!

    Cheers,

    John P.

  21. Rob says:

Great first episode. I do have the say, I find the white background a little dull, I miss the Trey Ratcliff backdrops. Also, something about you standing up seems to make you 5x peppier and makes me feel like somebody had too much sugar before filming. :)

I also really liked the live demos from way back when and the occasional out of context scenes like “Here’s our set!”, “Here’s my dogs!” or “Watch me make marshmallows!” Just a few suggestions for the new format. :)

    Longtime fan,
    Rob

  22. Fred M. says:

I liked the new format. You seem to have more energy, I know it is because your excited to have this new venture and hit #1 right away. Have fun with that. The add center, hey, you have to pay your bills. No worrys on that. This show can only improve. You have my support.

  23. Jeff says:

    Cali,
I loved your show as GeekBrief and am glad you didn’t call it quits and are now on GeekBeat. I’ve always loved your informative teck news and banter at the end (out-takes).

I agree with Rob, you should use another color other than white for your video backdrop as well as another color other than white for the website background color of the site. Maybe a nice gradation. Maybe another light as your arms seemed dark in the video. I always love when you have a product you’re talking about in hand and show demos with it. “Here’s my dogs!” is always fun too. Maybe have an episode on tech gadgets for cats/dogs/birds. I got my friend a “babble ball” for her dog and he goes nuts playing with it.

    Jeff

  24. clash says:

Are there any chances for ready-to-download (no feeds, no subscribing, video file only) format of Your “new” show?

  25. Fannar says:

    Good work!

3-6 minutes perfect. Don’t mind the ads. Maybe too much moving? :D

  26. Scott says:

    Hi Cali,

Hope all goes well for you at Revision3. The show overall was great as usual. As some have said above I am glad to see the format staying pretty much unchanged. The bad point for me is that it feels over produced. The advert was annoying but I normally just skip past them anyway and I understand they have to be there now that you are with revision3. That’s what pays the bills as they say. I obviously don’t know what’s going on in the back end but it comes across as it may be a case of “too many revision3 cooks, spoiling the broth.” I think part of geekbriefs charm (apart from yourself, obviously) was its simplicity. I would love to see that carried over with the new show.

    All the best

    Scott

  27. yusef says:

    Hi Cali,

    will you number the episodes?

great to see everything up and running again

  28. BoloMKXXVIII says:

    Cali,

Glad you got your first episode under your belt. I am sure they will get easier as you get used to your new “home” at Rev3. You are already on Roku’s Rev3 channel (That was quick). Hope you are on Miro soon. You said that was in the works.

Best of luck (not sure you need it though).

    BoloMKXXVIII

  29. Allister says:

Pretty good overall. Loved the first move – it looked more like a camera pan/zoom. The ad is fine but needs to be bookended with at least an audio stinger, or a backing track to make it distinct from the content either side.

  30. Steve says:

Are you kidding?! This is complete rip off from the show you did with your husband only you cut him out! Talk about classless. You build a show together, he helps you become popular and you cut him out. Shows what kind of a person you really are. Thankfully there are plenty of other shows to watch. The cutesy gets old after a while.

  31. laurence says:

resolution seems a little poor in itunes, geekbrief used to be perfect at full screen mode, now i have to watch you in a small screen mode

  32. laurence says:

Or maybe im an idiot who subscribed to the “small” version doh !

  33. angryearthling says:

    * netbooks
    i’ve had a few netbooks.
eee701- great but the 4gb was just too limiting.
eee904- gave it to my brother who needed mobile email that his phone couldn’t handle after i found it a little big.
acer aspire one-great system and probably the one that was best bang per buck in terms of usage.
olpc- my favourite. the screen that works fine in direct sunlight (not common in ireland but when its there can be annoying for mobile devices outdoors). the tablet mode. the handle which makes carrying very easy. the durability. the battery life. bit slow but the one netbook i will keep forever. don’t use it day to day as its too valuable as you can’t walk into a shop and just buy one.
samsung nc10-hate the keyboard / beside \ :-( but a very good solid netbook. replaced my mac mini with one running ubuntu.

have played with an ipad and while i will not buy one it did make me rethink netbooks. a netbook as i see it now is just a tablet which has a real keyboard. i’m surprised that they haven’t released a tablet with a separate keyboard that will support the tablet to use as a screen. there are times i want a tablet and times i want a netbook. having one device do both would be for me at least be best.

    * robot lifeboat
ingenious and practical. growing up beside the sea i was thought young to respect the water. seeing how people play in the water these days i wonder that more people aren’t hurt. there are times i dublin bay that the lifeboat needs to be called and something this small and fast might be far faster. especially if deployed from a helicopter for folk in trouble near cliffs. a semi submerisible could eventually find an unconcious persons head and refloat under it to get their head out of water. either way a great and useful invention.

    * pet atat. betting a nerd friend of mine is kicking himself. a huge stars wars fan i had suggested to him a few years ago that he get the lego at at and add the lego nxt system to it to automate it. then he could let it rove his house while he had rpg gaming sessions. just so that if anybody ever asked what it was doing he could say with a straight face. ‘searching for the rebel base’ :-)

great show. keep up the good work.

  34. clash says:

My bad! I’ve found those video files hidden under “how to subscribe” link …

  35. Mark says:

    Hi Cali,
Liked the first show, though I found the white background rather harsh particularly as I just moved to a 22″ LED backlit LCD so way too bright for lunchtime :)
The moving around was fine, helped me to concentrate on the show.
The 5 min or so length suits me well though the odd longer show would be fine.
    Cheers,
    Mark.

  36. Andrew D says:

Hey Cali- not bad for the first episode. To comment about the show (tho I might jump around a bit), at first I was going to complain about the no HD, but then I realized I hit subscribe on the wrong feed. The white background on the show is killing me. Pick something better! I like the mobility of the camera shots, tho. I’m not sure why, but you seemed a little sad inside, and didn’t bring as much ‘happy’ as you brought in the shiny happy tech news. Are you going to continue with the technology news, or are you going to go with something else? Otherwise, good show!!

  37. Todd says:

Hi Cali, glad to see you still on the air. Just my $.02 on the first show. The white background was a bit overpowering. You need something behind you – digital set maybe or at least a colorful border to the sides and top. The pace and energy were, as always, fantastic. I continue to love the blooper at the end. Looking forward to more.

  38. Jonny says:

    Hey Cali,
Great first episode of GeekBeat, I look forward to seeing more. I especially like the energy and enthusiasm of the episode and hope you will keep the upbeat tempo in episodes to come.
With regards to the show length, I think 5 minutes is good. Being a student in high school I get plenty of time to spend online, so it isn’t really an issue to me, but I can see where other people are coming from in that much longer than that would be too much.
    Thanks
    Jonny

  39. BoloMKXXVIII says:

    Steve,

    Seems like you know classless.

  40. Jason says:

Besides the white back drop I really enjoyed this first show. Been watching you since GeekBrief #1 and I am looking forward to continuing to watch you on GeekBeat.

  41. paul says:

Love the new show!!! I followed geekbrief for about two years and I have to say seeing you with rev3 is soooo nice now all my fav shows are on the same web channel YAY!!!

  42. Joe Larson says:

OH MY GOODNESS! That new toshiba netbook is EXACTLY what I want SOOOO bad. made a video about it a while back for lockergnome… but I don’t want to link to it in case my comment get’s blocked. Let’s hope toshiba’s dual touch screen fares better than the Microsoft Courier or the OLPC’s XO-2.

Love the show. Glad I ran into this one so early. (I’m gonna ignore that there’s show that came before this so I don’t have to watch all the back log.) Gonna be a regular here.

  43. Joe Larson says:

Experimentally, here’s the link to the video I did about the courier:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9rMCM1tg2w

  44. Mike Nixon says:

    Cali,
Loved the show! Things I really like…
    The new intro really cool!
I really like you standing while doing the show. I think it gives you more style and Moxie if you will.

    Things I don’t like…..hmmm…Nothing..lol

Great new show and I am happy that things are going well in subscribers..

    Keep up the great work!

Oh. I WANT one of those touch books!
    Mike

  45. Matt says:

    Libretto… not Libertto.

  46. Stef says:

I like the new white background! :) ))

  47. cgimusic says:

Great first show. Love the new graphics. I prefer the simplistic feel of it.

I never knew AT-AT was pronounced as “at at”. I always pronounce it like “ay tee – ay tee”. I feel like such an idiot.

  48. Barry says:

Excellent start with GeekBeat.TV I look forward to many years of shiny tech news from you.

Although the robot lifeguard may not be a model, it is at least effective in doing it’s job… and when you are in danger of going down… that’s a big plus!

    Cheers! :)

  49. Jeremy says:

First off, so glad you are on Revision3, great change for you and the show. With that said, don’t take any comments here negatively… you asked for them! :)

    - You need to get behind a desk. Rev3 has this problem on a number of shows, but it is clear why news anchors, talk show hosts, etc all use them. You aren’t sure what to do with your hands and you are inclined to sway/shift while talking which is distracting.

    - I actually LOVE the production of the show and think you just need to keep it tighter. Less swinging the camera from side to side and again…

    - Agree with all, the background needs to change. It washes you out a bit.

    - Watch out for being over bubbly, everyone on here is already sold on your personality and reporting skills. Just be yourself, more than ever before you sounded a touch nervous.

    - The ad… Film Riot handles the ad placement better than any show on Rev3. If you have to have it (which you do) then either just say be right back or make it a little more integrated.

Overall, Revision3 is awesome and I really feel like you have helped round out the lineup. Keep it up!

  50. haversman says:

Good first show. Loved the movement back and forth between stories. Very professional that way. Not sure how to describe the concept other than: change of scenery keeps it fresh.
Best of luck with the show Cali & Crew!

  51. Marcel says:

Good luck with the new show.

Missing the great copy text that was a signature attribute of Geekbrief.

Will check back in a while to see how the show grows.

  52. Cali, great kick off and look forward to many more! I’m spreading the word. Best of luck with the new show and format.

  53. Per says:

I really like the Geekbrief.tv extra large format in iTunes.
i’m usually watch you live or in iTunes on my laptop.

    Quick thought? why the change?

  54. Per says:

sorry, just found the HD edition, Thx

  55. Sam says:

Hey, I was devastated when I watched your last episode of GeekBrief! However I think your new show is awesome, I have subscribed in iTunes and have spread the word. The only thing I would say is that I really don’t like the white background, it makes the show seem a bit clinical and impersonal. Maybe thats just me??

  56. Heath says:

    OUTSTANDING 10/10
That sparkle in your eyes are back!!
I look forward to the next several years of my daily tech!

    Thanks Cali..

  57. Eric says:

I agree with (gasp) John P. I liked the zooming camera work. Distinctive. Libretto – check your pronunciation. The writing/content was a bit meh, but the material selected was good.

I think you were forcing it a bit. Seemed overly/falsely peppy.

  58. Seraphimhd says:

I like it, but something is still missing for me. It just feels mire like a college public access show now than it was with GeekBrief. Maybe it’s the blank background, I loved the cityscape backgrounds you guys used to use. It made the show feel much warmer.
And I would cut out the weird camera zooms and pans. It just doesn’t feel as pro as I know you guys are.

  59. Great new show Cali! Maybe I’m just blonde, but Where are the shownotes on here>?

  60. Cali Lewis says:

Sorry Michael! We’re making some changes to the format so I can post shownotes. :)

  61. BILLY says:

Steve, you don’t have a clue as to what is the truth of Cali’s situation…and shame on u…go watch the other shows.

  62. Rich Arreguin says:

Luv U, Cali and I luv the tech news. I have for a really long time. My may wish for the cast is to plez leave the bloopers for a stand alone podcast. It annoys me profusely.
I know I can’t be alone, but I also understand many people find it endearing. Again, make it a separate piece for them to watch until the cows come home.

    thx
