Today at MWC in Barcelona, Samsung announced its new flagship phone, the Galaxy S5 and a new member of the Gear Line, the Gear Fit. The new product had an overall theme of fitness all around and the GS5 added some useful new features. So let’s take a look at what Samsung announced.
The GS5 is the follow on to last year’s GS4. It’s a little thicker, a little wider, a little longer, and a bit heavier than the model it replaces. The screen is 0.1″ larger and it keeps the same 1080 full HD resolution. The CPU is upgraded from 1.9GHz Snapdragon 600 to a 2.5GHz Snapdragon 800. There’s a fingerprint sensor, and the camera is 16MP and shoots 4K. The wireless is 802.11AC and offers MIMO support. To be honest, these specs are nothing we haven’t seen before from competing flagships or Samsung’s own Note 3 even if slightly up-tuned. If you were looking for a 64-bit Galaxy, this isn’t the phone. You’ll have to wait for the GS6. If this phone is going to rise above, it’s going to be on features.
The GS5 is meant to be an active phone. In fact, one could argue it’s replacing the GS4 active as well as the mainline model. The phone meets IP-67 water RESISTANCE. It’s not supposed to be dunked like a LifeProof, but if you drop it or if it starts to rain, it’ll be in a lot better shape than earlier phones. That’s perfect if you take it out on a run or from splashes if you’re out on a boat. It also takes fitness to a new level. In addition to an update of Samsung’s S-Health software, which works with the accelerometer to be used as a pedometer, it comes with a heart rate monitor. This isn’t persistent, like a wrist-mounted unit, but it will give you a snapshot of your heart rate.
While the camera may be evolutionary, the camera software adds some useful features. You get HDR video and a new mode called selective focus (not to be confused with my college attitude) that mimics the low depth of field of a DSLR. This should be welcome news for mobile photographers. For those with kids, nieces/nephews, or any kind of young humans around, there is a mode to make the GS5 kid focused and keep the items from your adult life in your hands and not theirs. There’s also a black and white mode to save the massive 2800mah battery a bit. These are all good common sense features.
The GS5 debuts a new styling called glam. It’s very reminiscent of the faux-leather in the Note 3 It’s available in 4 colors: white, black, blue, and gold. Based on Samsung’s past, don’t be surprised if this list is added to in the next few months. The backs on these phones are dimpled like a golf ball. If you’re looking for one, it will debut in April with most carriers around the world.
While they showed off the Gear 2, which was to be expected, they also announced another new product which may be the showstopper, the Gear Fit. It’s not quite a smartwatch, so I’ll call it a fitness tracker with benefits. It’ll do everything that you’d expect from a FitBit, minus the rash from the band. By the way, it’s interchangeable and in a number of colors. It’ll also do a limited number of smartwatch functions as well like alert you to incoming calls, SMS messages, calendar events, and updates connect 3rd party apps. If you have a Galaxy Phone, and it supports 20 of them, this might be the best fitness tracker out there.
