Double Fine Productions Developing a New Graphic Adventure Game

February 10, 2012 By Nathan Gilchrist

Heads up! There’s an exciting Kickstarter underway, and the best part is: you don’t have to worry about all that herd mentality gumming things up just because you can’t back a losing horse. This one’s already won.

Shame on you, anyway.

Oh well, all is forgiven. While you’re here, you might as well take a look at it.

Tim Schafer, designer of Grim Fandango, arguably one of the best graphic adventure games of its time, is ready to make history again. This time, with his company Double Fine Productions, he’s inviting the public along for the wild ride of seeing a game from concept through development and into the hands of the players who usually have no clue what goes into the process.

Surprisingly, this project was successfully funded through its necessary $400,000 in the first eight hours of activity! At the time I write this, it’s almost been funded three times over and with about a month’s time remaining, it stands a real shot of surviving the usual budgetary pitfalls that can hinder the creative process and might even take on a few new features along the way.

Now all that remains is outright mutiny, but what can you do?

In the meantime, if you missed out on the graphic adventure heyday of the late 80s or early 90s, might I suggest looking up Grim Fandango on YouTube. It remains one of my favorites of the era featuring an abundance of wit and humor as well as an excellent soundtrack and voice acting that helped set the atmosphere for an enduring classic.
