It’s that time of the year when retailers brace themselves for an influx of holiday shoppers. I’m not a big shopper, so I was pleased to see Google show interest in making my shopping experience less stressful with indoor Google Maps. On Black Friday and throughout the holiday season, Google Maps for Android will have over 10,000 indoor floor plans available for retailer departments, food courts, ATMs and restrooms to assist you before and during your search for the perfect gift.
Indoor maps are currently available in selected locations in the U.S, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Japan, the United Kingdom, Sweden and Switzerland. While not in every city, floor plans are available for a number of local malls and select Best Buy, Bloomingdale’s, Home Depot, Ikea, Macy’s and Toys R Us stores. For a full list of participating retailers, visit the Indoor Maps Availability page.
For those who enjoy making Maps better, Google is allowing users to upload maps of public places (only in the US, UK, and Japan) and do walks to improve location accuracy. And for those who want to attack the stores as a group, you can use Google Latitude to keep track of your shopping buddy in real time.
I’ve checked out a couple of locations here in Dallas and have found it to be very useful. I’m sure this is only the beginning as Google’s map domination spreads across the globe. I’m hoping the next step will be to give me access to the retailer’s inventory, where I can make purchases with Google Wallet and have my items waiting for me when I arrive (I’m an optimist). For now, Google Maps indoor and the Floor Plan Maker are available for Android devices and can be downloaded from the Play Store. Happy shopping!
