Adding Cool New Stuff to the Geek House

July 21, 2014 by giovanni

As we get closer and closer to Grand Opening Day we wanted to give you another update on what we’re doing to get everything ready…

Permanently Wired Locations for Dropcams

We love our Dropcams and we know you guys do, too. So we decided while we were to putting them in place to give them permanently wired locations with USB power plates.

Samsung 78″ Curved Screen UHD TV

When visitors step into our lounge they’ll see an awesome video screen – the Samsung 78″ Curved Screen UHD TV. We unboxed it here, and now have it set up. So far, it’s the first place everyone just stops and stares.

Setting Up the Patron Wall

We’ve got a wall where we’ll be projecting names and photos of people who are helping us out every month as Geek Beat Patrons. We want everyone who visits us to see the people who make our work possible.

Badge Readers on All the Doors

Todd Pacey came down to Dallas and helped us install the Interlogix TruPortal security system donated by GE. With this system we’ll be able to control access to various parts of the building with badge readers.

Welcome to Our Kitchen

The kitchen area has completely come together, and it looks great! AND there are very well stocked coffee and tea drawers!

A Cool Conference Room

The projection screen whiteboard wall from Elite Screens for our conference room will be going up in the next few days as soon as we get the special adhesive for it. For now, Pablo our intern has taken over the room as his office.

CEA Gets Double Telepresence Robots Rolling

We’ve got three Double telepresence robots from Double Robotics so that our remote staffers like Editor-in-Chief Dave Peterson can roll around the Geek House and find the people they need to talk with to get work done. Big thanks to the CEA for sponsoring these robots for us!

Plans for UpDesk Central

We’ve got tape on the floor to mark where the UpDesks will go in the big room we call UpDesk Central and RoboReels that will allow people to pull power cords down from the ceiling. Also, we’re going to be getting some ceiling grommets from Chatsworth to make passing the cords through the ceiling work a little better. We’ve also got the 135″ screen from Elite Screens mounted on the wall, ready for movie nights!

Chilling in the Server Room

We’ve got the AC installed and running in the server room, and we’ve put the Chatsworth racks in place. And we’ve installed the big server chassis from 45Drives. Kien is still getting things set up the way he wants them, but we’re very excited about the possibilities here!

Messy Offices

Our offices are pretty messy right now, and the Rebel Desk treadmill has suffered the fate of all treadmills and become a storage rack. Dave’s office is actually looking pretty good, though.

Getting Camera-Ready in the Dressing Room

No more putting on makeup in the restroom! Now I have an actual dressing room, with a well-lit vanity where I can get my makeup done more easily.

Our New Storage Room

We have a lot of stuff that needs to be stored, and in the Geek House we have some awesome expanded storage capabilities! Here’s a quick look at how John built the shelves. The shelves go up with storage space to the ceiling, and we have rolling stairs to reach everything.

Our Massive Cyclorama Wall

The warehouse is the area where we’ll be building our sets. Right now the big attraction is the cyc wall, which will give an infinite white background behind things. You can see how the wall was built here.

Want to Leave Your Mark on the Geek House?

You can help build the geekiest place on Earth by putting your name on our Geek House Wall of Fame! Details are here.

Sponsored by Dollar Shave Club

For a few bucks a month, Dollar Shave Club ships amazing razors and
other bathroom stuff right to your door. Their blades are just as good as
the big shave companies’, at a fraction of the price! Check them out at dollarshaveclub.com/geekbeat.
