Amazon Buys Twitch For $1 Billion

August 25, 2014 by Benjamin J. Roethig

Not very long ago it seemed like Google was set to acquire gaming streaming service Twitch for $1 billion. Then Twitch announced it was shutting down its Justin.TV unit. Now the company has confirmed that it has indeed been acquired. However, we were dead wrong about it being Google. Instead, Twitch is set to become a division of Amazon.

The deal will include Amazon purchasing all outstanding Twitch Shares for $970 million. It’s an all-cash deal with no Amazon stock changing hands. The deal is supposed to close fairly quickly and the transaction completed by the end of the year. Twitch claims over 1 million users and 55 million user during just the last month. What’s not known is how Twitch will fit into the larger Amazon empire. For Twitch, it will mean access to Amazon’s services resources.

What do you guys think of the Amazon Twitch deal? Are you a gamer and use the service? Let us know in the comments below.
