In December of last year MIT made a pretty impressive announcement. They would begin hosting a series of free online courses. When I first saw the announcement I thought for sure that this would be a long way off. Well flash-forward to today and we already have a first course announcement and even open enrollment! The course will be Circuits and Electronics (MITx 6.002x) and will, you guessed it, focus on circuits and electronics. The course itself will run from March 5, 2012 through June 8, 2012 and at the end students will be able to earn a certificate from MIT! I could not be more excited about this!
Imagine an institute as seasoned and respected as MIT offering up its vast knowledge for free to the entire world! The Internet has been likened by many as a modern library of Alexandria. I have always agreed with this notion and find the concept incredibly fulfilling on some grand human scale. Of course the denizens of the Internet have had access to similar free courses for quite some time thanks to projects in the same vein as this but I do see MIT elevating this sort of thing to a whole new level. I really believe that the freeing of information and indeed education will be two of the most important steps that our species can make toward true advancement.
Grandiose and flowery statements about humanity aside I really am excited for this course, in particular as I am very into hobby electronics myself and hope to expand my understanding. But enough prosaic yammering, I’m off to enroll! You should too!
