Backing up and Restoring Settings on the QNAP TVS-463

October 28, 2015 by Robert Albury

Users have multiple options for addressing issues with the configuration of their QNAP network attached storage (NAS) devices. These options range from resetting or reinitializing the NAS (which will be looked at in an upcoming article) to backing up and restoring all settings, user accounts, the server name, and network configuration. This article is going to look at the process involved for backing up these settings as well as how to restore the backed up information.

Backing Up Settings

To back up all settings, user accounts, the server name, and network configuration, please use the following steps:

  1. After logging into the TVS-463, open the Control Panel by clicking on the icon on the web interface desktop.QNAP desktop - new
  2. Open Backup/Restore by clicking on its icon in the Control Panel window.Reset settings 1 - Control Panel new
  3. The contents of the right frame of the Control Panel window will change to the Backup/Restore Settings tab. Click on the Backup button.Reset settings 2 - Backup-Restore new
  4. Depending on the browser being used, users may need to select a location where the backup file is to be saved.Backup save location select

Restoring Settings

To restore backed up settings data, please use the following steps:

Click on the Browse button and change folders to the location where the backed up data file is located.Reset settings 2 - Backup-Restore new
  4. To restore backed up settings, click the Restore button to restore the settings.
  5. Click the Yes button when prompted to confirm that you wish to restore the settings.

  6. After the settings have been restored, a window will load asking to restart the system. Click Yes to restart the TVS-463 NAS.
    Restart

One thing that should be noted is that backing up and restoring user settings with this method does not make any changes to stored files on the NAS such as media or backups from other computers, it only affects configuration related files.
