The Boston Dynamics Cheetah robot we first saw last year gave the world the creeps by being the fastest robot on record, able run at a speed of more than 29 mph, beating the fastest human’s speed of 27.8 mph. But the Cheetah, was an indoor beast, leashed with power cables that assured us it wouldn’t run wild in the streets. Well, you can cross that comfort off the list.
Boston Dynamics has now unveiled the Cheetah’s successor, the WildCat, and they’ve taken this one of the leash. They’ve added a combustion engine to provide power and taken it out for an untethered test run. It certainly makes a bit of noise (so, yes, you’ll hear it coming), and the engine makes it heavier, so this one isn’t quite the speed demon the Cheetah was, currently running at about 16 mph. So that’s the speed you need to be working on beating in your sprints.
