Minecraft Canary is First Android App Into the Depths

September 30, 2010 by Gord McLeod

Last week I wrote about Minecraft, an indy game that has exploded into mass popularity despite being in the alpha stages. Now hot on its heels comes Minecraft Canary, an Android app that aims to help poor souls suffering (or enjoying) serious bouts of Minecraft addiction.

Canary offers a collection of helpful information for the Minecraft player, most notably a collection of every crafting recipe in the game. What strikes me as the most useful feature right now is a sun timer; especially early in a game, it’s critical that you know when the sun is going to go down so you can get yourself into some sort of shelter.

Right now there aren’t a whole lot of recipes in Minecraft, so the recipe list and game info is welcome, but not a standout feature. As the game moves out of alpha and the amount of content starts to explode, though – that’s when this app is really going to be a life-saver. I expect there to be a vast number of recipes to keep track of, so this will definitely be joining my app collection.

As with many apps, Canary is available in two versions; the free, ad-supported version, and for $0.99, an ad-free version with identical functionality.
