Here at Livid Lobster, we use Canon video cameras on a regular basis so the announcements from them sound great. The EOS C300 launches their new line of cameras made for the sole purpose of film and cinema, so don’t be too astonished when you learn that the price of this camera will be around $20,000. As their answer to the RED line (whose packages were previously running from $10k upto almost $60k,) they are bringing a lot of their professional specs to this smaller form factor camera while also delivering the look and feel of a DSLR.

A few hours later, RED came back with their own announcement, the Scarlet X. Personally, the RED line of video cameras have been my favorite though I’ve never actually used one due to the high price tag. Their previous entry, the RED Epic, can cost you $40,000 for just the body! RED cameras are loved for their ability to shoot at huge resolutions with gorgeous color at a large range of FPS which make all your video turn out amazing, though at the cost of a proprietary format and workflow. The new camera, Scarlet X, is much cheaper than the Epic (or as they refer to it, the Scarlet’s Older Sister) but promises to bring as many of the RED benefits for the smaller price.
RED Scarlet X General Specs
Price: ~$9,500 – $14,000
Sensor: 2/3 Mysterium X

As you can see, choosing between the two is going to be pretty difficult though the lower price of an affordable RED camera really piques my interest! What would you choose? Let me know in the comments below!
