Many users are discovering the iPad to be a great way to read the morning newspaper and catch up on events. But who says the events have to be terribly recent? The Civil War Today is an iPad app from A&E Networks (with History Channel branding) that brings daily news of the U.S. Civil War, in real time, but for a 150-year offset. Each day the app delivers a new edition of a newspaper providing news of that day in the history of the conflict as it happened 150 years ago. Previous days are available at the swipe of a finger or the tap of a button, but no looking ahead! It will allow readers to follow the unfolding war day by day.
Features include a couple of daily stories, photos, maps, a quote of the day, a to-date count of casualties, and even readable images of actual newspapers from the day in question. Letters and diary entries are provided for 15 people ranging from Abraham Lincoln to various soldiers and their wives. There’s also a daily Civil War trivia game to make sure you’re absorbing all this information, along with a glossary of common terms and biographies of the people involved.
The app is priced at $7.99 which might be a bit more than many are used to paying in the App Store, but this should be viewed as more an interactive eBook than anything else. That price will bring you daily updates for four years as war history progresses. Looking for a way to help your kids study the subject, or just learn more about it yourself? This app is well worth the price for anyone with interest in the war.
