How to Control Your Garage Door from the Internet

February 9, 2015 by Lewis Callaway

Did you know you can set up your garage door so you can open it via the Internet? I’m going to show you how, using an Electric Imp development board. You can get the code for this project on the Geekbeat TV Github page. This is handy for a couple of reasons. One is that you can open the garage door if your regular opener isn’t working. If you want to get it fixed immediately, you can contact the professionals at Titan Garage Door repair in Coquitlam. Also you can let someone like a pet sitter into your house without giving them the key. I like it so I can stay in my video editing suite and when someone calls me and wants in my house, I just have to open a website quick.

Here are the parts and tools you need for this build:

Parts:

1x Electric Imp

1x Electric Imp April Breakout

1x 2 Channel Relay Board

1x USB Wall Adapter

1x USB Mini-B Cable

Female Jumper Wires (These usually come in a pack of 20)

Lots of two conductor wire (You need this to connect the garage doors to the relay board. I got this at my local hardware store for $0.19 per foot.)

Tools:

Soldering Iron and Solder (Any kind would work but a Soldering Station is preferred)

Screwdrivers-You need a small one for the relay board and assorted ones to open and connect to your garage door.

Wire Cutters

Wire Strippers

Computer

Android or iOS device

Apart from these parts and tools, you just need a couple of hours and only a small bit of DIY electronics knowledge. You don’t need any special app on your phone to open it. If you want to, you could hook up a Dropcam like the ones in the Geek House and check to see if the garages are open.

That’s a great project! Such a good use of electric Imp to lock and unlock a garage door!

Can you send a screenshot of the page where you are actually controlling the garage door. Just curious to see what the interface looks like. Thanks. Nice job.
