Corning has brought its optical technology to USB 3.0 cables with its 3.Optical line. The cables are up to 50% thinner than traditional copper cables while maintaining the 5Gbps maximum throughput of USB 3.0 They’ll even work with USB 2.0 at USB 2.0 speeds. 3.Optical can reach lengths of up to 30 meters, that’s 10 times further than a traditional copper cable. This will allow you to keep a Direct Attached Storage array, a USB printer, or any other USB device at positions that are convenient for you, not the cable. They do come with one small downside, however – the optical cables will not carry power over USB. This will not work with bus powered devices.
10 meter 3.Optical cables are available now for $109. 15 meter and 30 meter will ship at a later date.

CORNING, N.Y., April 15, 2014 – Corning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW) today announced the availability of its USB 3.Optical(TM) Cables by Corning , capable of sending up to 5 gigabits per second of data at distances up to 30 meters.
Compatible with most USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 devices*, USB 3.Optical Cables by Corning quickly and easily extend data transmission beyond the 3-meter limitation of comparable copper cable.
Optical Cables by Corning were introduced in January 2013 and are now available for sale through select consumer electronic retail channels.
Enabled by Corning® ClearCurve® VSDN® optical fiber , the USB 3.Optical Cables by Corning are up to 50 percent thinner and up to 80 percent lighter than comparable copper cables, qualities that enable convenient transport. With a “zero-bend” radius, they can withstand bending, squeezing, and tangling without damage or loss of function, making them ideal for routing through the harsh environment of a crowded workspace.
