CP Design Turns Your iPhone Into an Old School Gaming Device

August 3, 2010 by Brodie Beta

CP Design's new iPhone gaming prototype gPod

CP Design based in Melbourne Australia is reinventing iPhone gaming with its recent prototype, the gPod.

Tactile gaming fans can rejoice– gPod aims to turn your iPhone into a traditional handheld device. After all–you didn’t spend years working on that A-B-B left combo for nothing.

This prototype is in the form of a case, wrapping the entire phone in its retro goodness. As you’ll see in the video there’s a D-Pad, left and right bumpers as well as a,b,x,y buttons.

Why would you want gaming to go back in time you ask?

While there are a lot apps that are well suited for the iPhone’s touch screen such as Angry Birds, or any bingo tour video game, emulated games of days-gone-by just don’t translate well without the old school layout and let’s face it, revisiting games from the past gives us the warm and fuzzies.

The folks at CP Design have provided a demo of the gPod working with the original iPhone but they assure us a new design is already underway to fit the iPhone 3G and 3GS.

I for one hope this is more than just a pipe dream. If you’d like to assist in getting this brilliant concept on store shelves, they’re looking for investors.

If this became available tomorrow would you buy one? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

I don’t have an iPhone…though I’d totally, yes totally be behind that being available for the iPhone!

Only 1 question needs answering. Would I need to jailbreak?

Yes I’d buy one! As long as it wouldn’t scratch or hurt my iPhone 4. I baby this thing to keep it looking good.
