We love quadro-copters around here, and why not? The Parrot AR is one of the coolest geek toys we’ve seen in a long time, but the four-rotor innovation keeps coming. Here, for your enjoyment, is a copter almost as small as the one DARPA was playing with a while back.
The CrazyFlie weighs about 20 g and the distance between motors is about 8 cm. It carries a rechargeable battery (with charging connector built into the circuit board) that provides 4.5 minutes of flight time. Control is accomplished by a gamepad plugged into a computer which outputs signals to a radio dongle on a USB connection.
It’s still a ways from being a retail product, but it does show how small this stuff can get, even when being put together by a private group. Check out the blog from Daedalus Projects for full details on the hardware and software involved.
