Daria Musk Gives Tips for Online Streaming Concerts

Last show, we took you behind the scenes of our studio here at the Geek House. Today, it’s another behind the scenes – but this one is a little different! We’re talking to Internet music star Daria Musk about HER studio and how she does the streaming live concerts for which she’s famous!

Daria’s streaming concerts have earned her 3.5 million followers on Google+. Google actually created Hangouts On Air after seeing what Daria was doing with Hangouts – which only allowed 10 people connected at a time when she started doing them.

Daria explained her studio workflow and let us in on the secrets she’s learned to make things work best (here’s one hint – use Ethernet – not Wi-Fi!). If you’re a musician looking to bring your tunes to an online audience, she shows you how it’s done!

She also talked about how doing streaming concerts helps her bring her music to people all over the world, wherever they are. It also allows a real two-way conversation between the musician and their audience – a very rare thing in the world of traditional music performance.

So, how would YOU like to start your own Hangout and get your music out to the world like Daria does? Well, now I am going to get into gear. Some of the gear is what Daria uses, but I am also going to show options for those who may be on a budget. I am going to go off of Daria’s AMAZING image…and go into each step.

GEAR

COMPUTER

Ok, so obviously, the first thing you are going to need is a computer or laptop. There probably are some minimum specs you will want to make sure you have, but for the most part if you can hook up a web cam or have an onboard camera, you should be fine.

INTERNET

You want to make sure you are plugged into your internet, and NOT relying on WI-FI. You can get some issues using WI-FI with lag etc, however this can be resolved by plugging your ethernet directly into the ethernet port of your computer.

For connection speed, ideally you want 10 meg up and down, however you can get by with 5. The more you have up the better.

WEB CAM

There are MANY webcams on the market, however the cam of choice around here is the Logitech C-920. This thing works with both Mac and PC and has been a great camera for me personally.

One of the pieces of gear she uses to manage her sound is the Boss VE-20 Multi-Effects Pedal.

Thanks so much to Daria for hanging out with us and showing us how she works her magic!
