EDITOR’S CHOICE: Ikan Fly-X3-Plus Handheld Gimbal Stabilizer (w Video Samples!)

August 17, 2015 by John P.

We got Ikan’s new $349.00 Fly X3 Plus handheld gimbal in for review a couple months ago. And we’ve actually used it several times for shooting various things for Geek Beat and around the Geek House in general. In fact, we LOVE this little gimbal, and it even rendered some other non-motorized gimbals (that actually cost just as much) completely obsolete from the moment it arrived.

The Fly X3-Plus is just so easy to use that anyone can do it! Plus, it just works. Every time.

So, without further ado, here is our complete review, including a walkthrough of the short film we shot entitled Times Up.

And now, you can watch the single-take, long tracking video in its entirety to see what the finished product looked like. Incidentally, the scooter featured in this video is the EcoReco.

Although we used the GoPro mount, the Fly X3-Plus can hold a phone just fine if you’d like to shoot with an iPhone, or a Samsung S6 or Note, or whatever.

Extra batteries are also available for $49 each if you intent to spend a long day at the skate park, on the lake, or generally filming any kind of action you desire.

Geek Beat Editors Choice - 2015
Since the moment we first laid eyes on the Fly X3-Plus at NABShow 2015 we were intrigued. But when it arrived in our studio for review it became the center of everyone’s attention for quite some time – this despite the fact that we have arsenals of high dollar equipment everywhere.

The versatility of this little device could really only be demonstrated the way we did it by shooting the short film in a single take. There is simply no other way we could have shot that film. Even our full sized Steadicams – in fact, especially our full sized Steadicam – wouldn’t have allowed the mobility necessary to shoot this entire video in a single shot.

If you are at all interested in shooting video with your phone, or a GoPro you owe it to yourself to strap it to a Fly X3-Plus.

Here’s a new development: we’ve decided that the GoPro mount, standard phone mount, and large phone mount should ALL come with the gimbal, and not piecemeal like they were.
SO! From now on, when you buy the gimbal, you get all the mounts, free of charge.
Shipping may go up by 50 cents, though. Budget for that. Maybe a whole dollar, to be safe.
