It does seem like this has morphed into audiophille.tv
Monster Cable? Paradigm? Martin Logan? McIntosh? Cable installation tools (used primarily for A/V systems)? Pick up any Stereophile from the past 20 years and you’ll see the same basic stuff. It’s nice stuff, but I gave up on overpriced high-end audio when my 2yo destroyed the tweeter in my Totem Mani-2s.

The more we see of John P, the less we see of gadgets and general purpose tech.

I totally disagree with ML. I was glad to see the CEDIA coverage because no one else is doing it. I love custom A/V gear, and yeah I can’t afford most of it. I can’t afford Ferraris either but I love to go to car shows and check them out. Obviously ML isn’t watching the weekly live shows or:
    a) He would know that Cali and John still do science stories, robots, news, and lots of other stuff.
    b) He’s get to know John better and probably appreciate him more.
Unless he ONLY wants to watch Cali just because she’s hot and not because he’s really a geek.

Did I miss something? Is this GeekBeat? Did Cali move along to do a different show or something?

Honestly, most of this CEDIA stuff has been boring. Lots of expensive crap that isn’t for mere working mortals. A 5 point surround system built into a wall. Guess what. Who cares? I’d be more interested in a workflow diagraming application for my Mac or iPad. Maybe John P. likes this stuff, but I don’t.

    That’s not fair.

I’m sure this stuff has an audience, but I miss the quality and focus of the old GeekBrief, not to mention the fact that while I’m sure you’re a swell guy, John P., I much prefer watching Cali Lewis discuss network attached storage than you discussing pretty much any of this high end home entertainment junk.

It seems GeekBeat has wandered away from tech, and wandered into John P.’s personal life which isn’t as interesting to many as it is to him I suspect. Bring back the tech news. Bring back the IT related news, the science news. In a world with tech wars based on weaponized patents, and particles moving suspiciously faster than the speed of light, and Berkley scientists creating ground breaking startling images from information pulled from the brain, and the need for loud spokes people on issues such as Net Neutrality and the balkanization of media outlets on the Internet, you give me speakers. You lost me at the $25,000 per speaker pair you showed last week.

Essentially GeekBeat has evolved from something I must watch to something I will watch if I bump into it. I’ve started deleting them in mass from my TiVO without a thought.

      M.L.,

You’re right, the old GeekBrief show you referred to was very different. It was a two person operation and was easy to consume, because there was so little to actually consume. They used to create about 20 minutes per week of content.

GeekBeat is different in many ways, not the least of which is the amount of content we provide, in addition to the outlets by which we provide it. We have a team of nearly 50 people, and by contrast we put out about 3-4 hours per week of original video content plus a lot of written content.

True, CEDIA is a very specialized show. But the high end components we’re looking at today are the commodotized technology we’ll be buying in 5 years. For example, Martin Logan electrostatic speakers used to cost $10k per pair. Now you can get a pair for $2,200! That is squarely available to the vast majority of the GeekBeat audience.

And I would agree that your critique was unfair. We showed you some very high end stuff that only the ultra-rich can afford, but that’s something we do periodically just for fun! In addition, we also showed you a brand new TIVO, an awesome tool for running cable (like network cable), a cool Monster Cable wireless connector for small high-quality speakers, a robotic T-shirt canon, a really cool paradigm subwoofer, and many more things that are absolutely affordable and available to the mass market.

Now, of course you prefer to watch Cali on video! We all do. But Cali and I divided up at the show in order to bring you the most coverage we could. You probably didn’t know, but we did 45 interviews in 3 days! That was Cali and I working non-stop all day and night, along with our entire team, to bring you that information. It’s not something any one person could have done.

On this end we’ll continue knocking ourselves out to bring you more coverage, of more events, and in more ways (the podcast, YouTube, the blog, the live show, the TV show, etc.). And in between these events, Cali will continue to do normal shows. Please don’t mistake GeekBeat’s expanded coverage for abandoning the other stories which we all still love.

And don’t for a minute think that the reason we do anything is based on my personal predeliction towards whatever it is. We try and provide coverage that Geeks can enjoy. That means coverage for all geeks, but not that every geek will enjoy all coverage.

      John P.
