Today, there are currently over 160 million active chrome users. And within the last year, there were 8 versions of Chrome developed. This just shows how quickly the web is changing.
One new feature is the addition of the ‘speech’ attribute to HTML 5. Simply add the attribute code to an input field and a small mic icon will appear. Then you can just click on the icon and use your voice to enter the data. You may have seen this in various mobile apps. This is now available for Chrome Web apps.
Speed in Google Chrome is also a high priority. Google has made significiant progress on GPU acceleration. From CSS transformation, Canvas 2D, and WebGL, these technologies have significantly sped up the web.
Chrome Web Store
The Chrome Web Store has helped developers reach the users and also monetize with their web apps. Users who buy apps through the Chrome Web Store spend more time in the app, and make 2.5x more transactions.
To help reach more users, Google announced that the Chrome Web store will be available in 41 languages.
A new in-app purchase API will be available for developers. For example, take the comic book app, Graphic.ly. They would like users to be able to preview comic books, and one they read to a certain point, allow the users to easily purchase the rest of the book. This new feature is just one line of code, making it easy for both the users and developers. In addition, Google announced that there will only be a 5% flat rate fee to use this in-app purchase code. No fixed fees, no monthly fees, no signup, and no licensing. That means 95% of the revenue stays with the developers!
Just announced today, Angry Birds makes the leap to the web! You will be able to purchase Angry Birds through the Chrome Web store. And since the game will be played in Chrome, there’s more room for local storage, making it possible to play the entire game of Angry Birds offline! As an added bonus, there will be exclusive Chrome levels for you to play.
Three Dreams of Black is a fun interactive multimedia project that blur the lines between what is a website, video, and game. Coding samples are available at here. For more information about the project, see here.
Chrome OS is simply defined as nothing but web. This new operating system would run on Chromebooks, with these features:
Two Chromebooks will be available on June 15th. The first is from Samsung with a 12″ screen, and the second is Acer with an 11″ screen.
Lastly, if you’re worried that the Chromebooks won’t have enough apps to get what you need done, I’m sure there will be many fun apps by the end of the year. All Google I/O attendees will be receiving Chromebooks to develop goodies for you!
