iPhone Video. OWLE Bubo Style. The Complete Package

February 9, 2011 by Ross LaRocco

OWLE Bubo NakedThe OWLE Bubo cranks up the potential of the iPhone’s camera to capture professional looking video and photos. This accessory isn’t new, but there are tons of things one can do with it.

I own the model which was released for the iPhone 3GS.  Switching to the iPhone 4 added some hassle to the set up. The case I used didn’t keep my phone snug inside the mount at all. Instead of trial and error with cases, I decided to wedge some of my Meet-Meme cards in the top which ended up being a great alternative. It also blocked the sun for video blogging in extreme lighting conditions.

Recently, the folks at OWLE released an iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 4G friendly model.

The OWLE comes with a few basic components. One 37mm wide angle lens, an external 180 degree microphone, and a case which fit my iPhone 3GS at the time. These weren’t enough for me, so I added a few things.

Monster MBL HPHONE JK S Mobile SoniTalk Microphone

iPhone 4 Microphone Adapter (Required for Rode VideoMic to function)

iMovie – Great editor if time is a factor when polishing up videos.

Grab a tripod to keep your shot steady.  The OWLE Bubo has four tripod mounts. Very handy for monopod situations as well.  The video below is an example of what you can do without carrying around a huge camera, and having no camera man at all. Think of how it compares to the bigger and beefier camera set ups.  Do you really need one?
