The future of smart robots that can control themselves is coming! The end is near!
OK well not exactly, but Dallas-based Texas Instruments and iRobot are teaming up to have TI’s OMAP chips in iRobots next generation devices. iRobot is famous for the Roomba that cleans floors on its own, as well as other household cleaning devices in their product line.
If the OMAP name sounds familiar, it is the very same platform that is powering dozens of mobile devices out there such as the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Now it is not entirely clear which OMAP iRobot will use in their future products, but all signs point to the new OMAP 5 platform that Texas Instruments has been showing off of late. The two companies say they share a vision of making “intelligent and practical robots capable of enhancing people’s lives”.
Now if you ask yourself why would a robotic vacuum need an advanced chip as such, you may be thinking along the lines of robots disobeying and turning on their owners. While that does sound like a nightmare storyine from TV, in all seriousness though it does give the capability for smarter and more interactive devices. It will be interesting to see what exactly the two companies will be able achieve together – a Jetsons-esque future of intelligent robots in the home quickly is becoming a reality.
