Is an Upgradable TV in Your Future?

February 16, 2011 by giovanni

Are upgradable TVs the way of the future? This concept envisions a system that would allow users to add elements like a faster processor and streaming or Blu-ray support as they need them, rather than settling on a set configuration from the manufacturer. What do you think, is this idea going to fly? Let us know in the comments.

    Hi Cali,
I use a mini pc behind my TV to give it the flexibility as is described by this concept.
So yeah, I would be a fan of a system like that, but keep in mind that the people who reply to this story are tekies/geeks. Perhaps these options do not appeal to the average consumer.

That is a silly idea. Haven’t we learned from Apple, that less is more. If it is designed well there is no reason to add more variables and make the system unstable and open up the door to possible crashes and have yet another Microsoft PC like product to deal with!

    Cali,
I watch geekbeat everyday on my Tivo and love it. I have never written. But I think you are totally naive if you buy into this guy’s idea of upgradable tv. His own logic is what shoots him down. Years ago proabably before you were a geek they tried to build computers with upgradable components that was easy for the consumer. Not that the concept didn’t work but two things happened.
    A) to total cost of the components when sold seperately was way too high making the total cost out of line.
    B) while you may be able to add a blu-ray or drive, we both know the supporting logic around a CPU or video does not allow this to be cost effective. Have you ever seen anyone make a substantial leap in CPU power on a motherboard? No, you end up buying a new motherboard. Add memory, sure but not a major component.
The basic cost of building a box that can accept upgraded components is not cheap and his example of adding a hard drive to an xbox is not a good comparison. hard drives are still basically the only component where upgrading is easy. Even memory has a million choices of speed and other factors.

This one won’t happen in my humble opinion.
    The show is very entertaining.

    “Concept” meaning it doesn’t exist.

This is just some random guy pretty much saying “wouldn’t it be good if you could upgrade your TV?”

First video says things like “worlds first 0mm bezel”, but it still doesn’t actually exist.

Such a non story. Shame on you.

    Hello Dave,
interesting concept, but can every user upgrade tv components, i mean do they have the ability to do that. I have no idea about that!

I personally would love that concept because that would make a large screen tv, say bigger than forty inch, affordable for a guy like me who loves to watch movies. 😀

I don’t see it happen in the near future though.

    Take care,
    nick
