John P’s Last Episode

Facebook to Support 360-Degree Video

While speaking to developers at Facebook’s annual F8 conference in San Francisco, Mark Z revealed news that Facebook is soon to support 360 video.

So that means you’ll finally be able to purchase cameras like the V.360, Ricoh’s Theta M15 or the Kodak SP360 and have widespread support for the video you shoot so friends and family can join along on your adventures!

New Fiber is Tougher Than Kevlar – And Stretchy!

And since you’re going to be getting all wild and crazy once people can finally see your reaction while holding the camera, you might need some ruggedized gear. Luckily, Scientists at my alma mater, UT Dallas, have created a new kind of fiber that’s even stronger than Kevlar, and that can stretch up to 7 times its normal length!

It seems Kevlar can absorb up to 80 joules per gram before it breaks, but the new material can handle up to 98!

Apparently they made the Spiderman inspired fabric by spinning… are you kidding me… polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and polyvinvylidene fluoride trifluoroethylene… well they spun that stuff into nanofibers and then twisted ’em into yarns.

What makes the thread so tuff is that they’re piezoelectric materials and when you stretch them it basically creates an electrical force that pulls it back together.

They’ve actually only managed to make tiny little amounts in a lab, so the next step is figuring out how to mass produce it.

Twitter Gains a Periscope!

While you’re waiting on your new super fabric you might want to take it easy and do some sightseeing. And Twitter wants you to take your followers along with their new real-time live video streaming app, Periscope.

It’s for iOS only at the moment, but when you go live it instantly notifies your followers who can join, comment and send you hearts in real time. It also keeps track of how many hearts you get from your viewers. The more hearts, the higher you get in the “Most Loved” list, which presumably means that people are going to start doing some really crazy stuff to try and get attention on Periscope, really, really soon.

Anyway, when the broadcast is over, you can make it available for replay so viewers can watch later, but currently only for 24 hours. So you’re not going to use it to capture anything permanent, like with YouTube Live.

Also, I have no idea how long you can actually be live. I would guess there is some sort of a limit.

John P. Rides Into the Sunset

And finally… I’m not sure if you caught that little nugget back at the beginning of the show, but yes, this is going to be my final episode of Geek Beat!

A few weeks ago I let our Patrons know on a private post that after 5 wonderful years working with the most talented team in Tech News, I’m throwing in the towel and re-retiring. I mean, I’m retiring again. It’s something I like to do every 5 years or so.

On a serious note, I feel like the most fortunate person in the world to have been able to partner up with Cali on this crazy ride. And we’ve been so fortunate to have an amazing staff of people who care for us and make us look good! Dave Curlee is a magician with the video stuff. I mean just check it out. He can give me flaming hands!

And he can beam me out…

And beam me back…

And beam me BACK!!!

Ok, he gets a little pissed when I make him do stuff like that, but anyway, he’s cool. And Kien the engineer can build anything anyone dreams up. And Dave Peterson catches all of the stupid things I try to say and makes me look way better than I am on ye olde website.

And Ben gives us the most awesome content for our Live Shows!

And there are so many other awesome team members who I absolutely cherish! Past and present! Gord, and Norm, and Pelpina and Dhiren, and Mark Zamora – the original intern. And Pablo the Senior intern, and Carter the intern turned producer. And even more. I’m really sorry for everyone I didn’t name! The pressure is getting to me!

The thing is, it’s time for me to get back to professionally lighting things on fire. And welding stuff. And driving too fast. And attempting a record breaking spree of picking up hot chicks! So before I’m way too old, I’m just gonna do it. All of it.

Of course, you can always follow along with my crazy antics on Twitter and Google+ and especially on my crazy personal website over at OneMansBlog.com.

Now, Cali has some more news about her plans coming up in another episode, so you’re going to want to stay tuned for that! And if anyone wants to chat me up you can tweet me, or email me to john@geekbeat.tv or whatever.

So, I want to take this one last opportunity to say thank you from the bottom of my heart for tuning in. Not just today, but for the last 5 years.

      Hi Green! 🙂

Glad to have you back! We missed you! I hope all is well, thought I’m a little worried. You know how to reach me privately if you want…

Maybe one day you can come visit the Geek House in Texas and hang out! Don’t worry… you don’t have to marry me. My wife probably wouldn’t appreciate that! haha

This could just be an April fools joke.
If she and John had a difference of opinion.
Why is she still using the Geekbeat intro?
Why is she using the Geekbeat feed?
Why would Geekbeat advertise the first video of geekslife on this site?
Why would Luria go and take Geekbeat patreons? Isn’t that against the terms of service.

Before the geek house was purchased and building plans were made. They had to talk to an accountant make sure how much they can afford every month.

John owns Livid Lobster, which owns Geekbeat.
If I owned a business, and one of my employees left, I wouldn’t let them use anything associated with my brand or business.

I really couldn’t believe it – john P leaving after all the work in setting up Geekbeat TV and the move to the new premises. I’m sure all of your viewers really want to know what’s happened as this was all very sudden and you have such a great show and it works so well. John – please tell us what’s really going on !!

If John is being run off for not looking like a Geek then I say “Discrimination Law Suit” or demographic plastic surgery.
Some of us are just attempting to figure out which way is up in this world. We see a good team that makes the world we will live in easier to understand. Good Luck to John and to all! May the Beat go on!

WOW! – the place is just starting to get lived in and you’re leaving.
I guess we’re gonna have to make do with re-runs for the next 5 yrs?

(hey, isn’t “retired” just short for really tired?)
    🙂
Have a great time JohnP and I hope there’s some wild chance that eventually our paths will cross.
