Meet the newest partner in that crusade, the Newer Technology miniStack MAX. This little box packs in a hard drive, an optical drive (Blu-ray/CD/DVD), an SD card reader (SDXC), and a powered USB 3.0 hub with three ports for charging, one of them running at 2.1 Amps for tablet needs. Outside of hard drive capacity, there are two versions – both have read/write for CDs and DVDs, but for a few dollars more, you can get write on Blu-rays as well. Connectivity can be by Firewire 800/400, USB 3.0, or eSATA.
The device is compatible with Macs and PCs, and its footprint matches Mac minis from 2010 and later.
Pricing runs from $149.99 for an enclosure with an empty drive bay (bring your own), and if you want write on Blu-ray, that’s $10 more. Alternately, it can come equipped with a drive ranging from 500GB to 4TB, with prices topping out at $569.99 for 4TB and Blu-ray write.
If you’ve got a newer Mac without an optical drive, or are just looking to consolidate some functionality, this could be the solution you need.
