As electric and electric hybrid cars like the Chevrolet Volt work their way onto our roads, the infrastructure needed to keep these cars charged is developing as well. GM’s OnStar division is today opening up a set of proprietary APIs so that power companies can help electric car owners out with their charging decisions. The plan is tighter integration between cars like the Volt and the Smart Grid that will keep them running.
GM hopes that by integrating the OnStar technology in cars with information held by power utilities, electric car ownership can become easier and provide more cost savings.
