When you think of rugged cases for mobile devices, you think of two names: OtterBox and LifeProof. Well, those two names are now one. OtterBox has acquired TreeFrog Developments, Inc, the parent company of LifeProof, for an undisclosed price.
This move makes a lot of sense with OtterBox being known for rugged cases, like their Defender series, which are not quite waterproof. LifeProof has exclusively made cases for iDevices, like the Frē for iPhone 5 we reviewed, that are protected against the four proofs: water, snow, dirt, and shock. OtterBox recently released a similar style waterproof case called the Armor Series. OtterBox will incorporate LifeProof into itself over the next 30 days and make final decisions on the product lineup at that time. At this time, it is unknown whether any remnants of the LifeProof brand will be retained or whether this is a talent acquisition for the next generation of OtterBox cases. The Fort Collins based OtterBox, however, did note the San Diego offices of LifeProof do plan to remain open at this time.

This sucks, lifeproof cases are far better than otterbox. I’ve owned the otterbox defender and it only lasts a year before it starts falling apart.
