After a 23-year run, cancelled in 2006, LeVar Burton is bringing “Reading Rainbow” back in the form of a mobile app.
“There is a brand new generation of kids who could definitely use the kind of spark and inspiration Reading Rainbow provided where actually becoming a reader is concerned,” Burton told Mashable. “As far as I can tell, reading will never go out of style, and neither will good old-fashioned storytelling.”
There aren’t many details at the moment but he also plans on bringing streaming of classic episodes and DVDs after launching the app, which will feature hundreds of books with a “Reading Rainbow-like” experience. No word yet on which platforms the app will exactly be on.
Help from Twitter
To help with the promoting of the app, Burton rallied 1.74 million Twitter followers to get the “Reading Rainbow” twitter handle back from an user who had the handle.
