REVIEW: Cobra Tag Keeps a Two-Way Link Between Your Keys and Phone

September 1, 2011 by Pelpina

If you’re like me, you only lose important things: your keys, phone or purse. I can’t tell you the amount of time I’ve spent searching for one of these items!

The Cobra Tag wants to prevent that. The Cobra Tag is a small black dongle that you can attach to your purse, keys, laptop bag or anything else you want to keep track of. It communicates with your phone through the free Cobra Tag app for either Android or Blackberry (sorry folks, no Windows Phone or iPhone).

Cobra Tag: How It Works

If you lose your purse or keys, just launch the app. As long as your phone and the lost item are within 30 feet and able to connect over bluetooth – the Cobra tag will sound a very loud, high and annoying chime.

Both devices can communicate with each other bidirectionally, so if you misplace your phone – you can also push a button on the cobra tag to call your phone. If you’ve put your phone on silent (that always happens to me when I lose my phone), the cobra tag can override that, and still make your phone ring!

So, this way, you’re covered – as long as you lose just one thing at a time, and if both devices are withing Bluetooth range to communicate.

Cobra Tag vs Zomm

When I first heard about the Cobra Tag, I immediately thought it was a Zomm-wannabe, a similar wireless leash that helps you find lost items. The Zomm has several functions the Cobra Tag does not have: a fully functioning speakerphone for incoming calls, and it can sound a loud panic alarm and automatically dial emergency assistance. But it turns out, the Cobra Tag also has several interesting functions the Zomm does not have.

First of all, the Cobra Tag has a very cool security function. A function called ‘Phone Halo’ can automatically lock down your phone if it gets outside of the range of the Cobra Tag. So, if you leave your smart phone behind after watching a movie at the theater, your phone will automatically be locked down as soon as you leave the theater.

And if you come home and aren’t sure where you lost your phone (is it in the car, my house, the movie theater?) the Cobra Tag has you covered as well. One of the best parts of the Cobra Tag is that the app can record the GPS location and the time of day the two items were separated. It can send you that info via email, text message, Twitter, or Facebook account. So, instead of searching your house, car, and calling the movie theater – all you need to do, is check your email!

Purchase Cobra Tag

Cobra Tags are available for purchase online for $59.95, and the smartphone application is free.
