Review: HMDX Jam Party Bluetooth Rechargeable Stereo Speaker

August 5, 2013 by Pablo Peillard

5C3A9647From the guys who brought you the Jam Plus (better known as HMDX), we bring you the Jam Party, a rechargeable Bluetooth stereo portable speaker that can really bring tunes anywhere you go.

The guys at HMDX made sure to reduce waste from their products, which is why the Jam Party (as well as other Jam speakers and HDMX products) come in a reusable acrylic container for you to store your thingamajigs. The Jam Party comes in 4 colors (or flavors), pink or watermelon, yellow or pineapple, blue or blueberry, and grey or blackberry and the 12-hour battery will make sure you don’t run out of tunes from party to party.

5C3A9646The caveat of the Jam Party is that you don’t get phone call controls which are universally included in most Bluetooth speakers. On the top (from left to right) you get the bluetooth indicator, which lights up blue if connected to a device, power button, backward, pause, forward, volume up and volume down (independent from the device) and the charging indicator. On the bottom you get a pop out kickstand that should help spread the sound evenly around a room.

5C3A9642The battery life really stood out on this speaker. I took it on a vacation last week and I charged it every other day, only because I felt the battery should’ve died already, but the Jam Party would keep playing. The Jam Party is loud enough to cover a large room or jam out at the beach. The included AC adaptor makes charging a breeze since I don’t have to worry about USB adaptors supplying enough power.

Unlike other wireless speakers I’ve paired with my iPhone, the Jam Party won’t display a battery indicator next to the Bluetooth connected symbol which makes it impossible to get a reading on the battery percentage. The box advertises a 30 foot range but its really around the 10 feet range if you don’t want your songs skipping (Edit: Short range was due to the case used on the phone or other device). Your mileage may vary depending on device though (I tried it on an iPhone 5, iPad 2 and a variety of Android phones). You are also able to plug in a 3.5 mm cable for wired connections.

Pros

  • Can get loud without distortion
  • Long battery life
  • Various colors
  • Integrated kickstand

Cons

  • No phone controls
  • No way of knowing the battery percentage
  • ~10 foot range

The Jam Party from HMDX is a great Bluetooth speaker. You can literally take it anywhere and have your own small party. But the fact that I’m unable to check on the battery percentage makes it a bit unreliable, even with the 12 hour battery life. You can get it at Amazon.com for $90.
