REVIEW: KEF Q Series (Video Review, Photos, and Pricing)

August 31, 2012 by John P.

KEF Q Series

KEF Q Series

KEF, one of the UK’s premier speaker manufacturers, offers a wide range of speakers that start with the very affordable KHT series, and move right on up to the completely outrageous $200,000 Muons. But pretty much in the middle of their range sits the Q Series.

An entire room full of these speakers can be had for $3,000 – $5,000 depending on if you go with the largest or smaller offerings, and depending on if you need full 7.1 or 5.1 setups. KEF sent us the complete high-end 7.1 setup, and I gave it a thorough test. Here’s what happened…

The Video Review

And now, on to the specifications and prices! Keep in mind that the Q series is available in three colors: black, cherry and walnut. If you order them, make sure you get the matching colors! All of the links below are to the black ones.

KEF Q900 Floor-Standing Speakers

KEF Q900

KEF Q900

These are the two main left and right speakers in the system. KEF also offers two smaller units – the Q700 and Q500 variants at lower price points and with smaller drivers.

Specifications

Drivers: One 8 in Uni-Q midrange; One 1.5 in vented dome tweeter; One 8 in woofer; Two 8 in radiators
Frequency Response: 32Hz – 40kHz
Sensitivity: 91dB
Power handling: 200W
Dimensions: 41.7″(h) x 9.6″(w) x 12.7″(d)
Weight: 49 lbs

On Amazon

  • The KEF Q900s are $899 each.
  • The KEF Q700s are $749 each.
  • The KEF Q500s are $549 each.

Q600C Center Channel

KEF Q600c

KEF Q600c

The Q600c is the bigger brother of the center channel speakers, and if you go with the Q700 or Q800 mains I would highly recommend the larger center so that you don’t drown it out. However, if you drop down to the Q500s for the left and right, you could also consider the Q200c for the center. Just a slightly smaller version of this bigger brother.

Specifications

Drivers: One 6.5in Uni-Q midrange; One 1in vented dome tweeter; One 6.5in woofer; One 6.5in radiator
Frequency Response: 45Hz-40kHz
Sensitivity: 87dB
Power handling: 150W
Dimensions: 24 3/4″(w) x 8 1/4″(h) x 12″(d)
Weight: 31 lbs

On Amazon

  • The KEF Q600c are $649 each.
  • The KEF Q200c are $449 each.

Q300 Bookshelf Speakers

KEF Q300

KEF Q300

KEF also offers a Q100 variant, so if you’re opting for the smaller front speakers go with the smaller rears as well. But if you’re in need of just a great set of bookshelf speakers don’t forget that the Q300s and Q100s can serve as stand-alone speakers on their own! And sound fantastic doing so.

Specifications

Drivers: 1 x 6.5in Uni-Q midrange; Uni-Q 1in tweeter
Frequency Response: 42Hz-40kHz
Sensitivity: 87dB
Power handling: 120W
Dimensions: 8 1/4″(w) x 14″(h) x 12″(d)
Weight: 17 lbs

On Amazon

  • The KEF Q300 are $649 a pair.
  • The KEF Q100 are $449 a pair.

Q800ds Dipole Speakers

KEF Q800ds

KEF Q800ds

Thes dipoles are excellent for either use as direct rear surround speakers, or side channel speakers in a 5.1 or 7.1 (or even 9.1) setup.

Specifications

Drivers: Two 5.5 in Uni-Q midrange; Two 1 in vented dome tweeter
Frequency Response: 100Hz-40kHz
Sensitivity: 85dB
Power handling: 100W
Dimensions: 14″(w) x 7″(h) x 7″(d)
Weight: 16 lbs

On Amazon

  • The KEF Q800ds are $799 a pair.

Q400b Subwoofer

KEF Q400b

KEF Q400b

Don’t forget the sub! The main speakers sound great, but without a big dedicated subwoofer you’re going to miss out on half the fun. If you have $16k sitting around, get the KEF Series 209. Otherwise, the Q400b will do just fine. 😉

Specifications

Driver: 1 x 10in
Enclosure: Sealed front-firing
Frequency Response: 28Hz-140Hz
On board power: 200 RMS Class D amp
Dimensions: 13″ x 13″ x 13″
Weight: 30 lbs

On Amazon

  • The KEF Q400b are $699 each.
