It’s tough to say a cable is a life saver, but the Scosche smartBOX has been just that to me over the past few weeks. It made my trip to the Geek House in Texas real easy. So, now that you’ve been teased, I’ll tell you all about this miracle cable.
Have smartBOX Will Travel
I’ve had a fear of retractible cables. They’ve never worked right for me, until this one. The smartBOX gives you up to 3ft of cable. Less if you don’t need it. A good majority of the time, that’ll be enough. The spool is internal and the connectors have nice neat places within the sides of the square enclosure. The smartBOX is small enough that it’s very pocketable. It’s something you can have with you all day, every day. One of the really cool features of this is the connector. The main tip is Apple Lightning for your iPhone, and yes this is MFI compliant, but there is a secondary tip three inches into the cable that pulls out to reveal a MicroUSB connector. Combination Lightning/MicroUSB cables aren’t unheard of anymore, but the inclusion in something so pocketable is really neat. If you have an iPhone which is Lightning and a power case, which are almost exclusively MicroUSB, it’s almost a necessity. The cable parts themselves are flat and won’t easily tangle.
So how well does it work? Very well actually. It syncs and charges as well as any cable out there. I’ve yet to see the dreaded “unsupported” message that will occasionally pop up on even MFI compliant cables. The USB tip works great, but only if it’s a flush plug. If the MicroUSB port is recessed, it won’t always fit. But this is a device to device and power case to case. The retraction works well most of the time. There are a couple times when I’ve had to try a couple of times to get it in there straight. Overall, this is a very well made and very useful cable.
Pricing and Availability.
The smartBOX costs $24.99 on Scosche’s website. This is a reasonable price for the cable. You can get cables cheaper, but not ones that are tangle free and include both connectors.
Scosche’s smartBOX is a cable that everyone should own. It’s well designed, easily fits in your pocket, and works with both Apple Lightning and Android/Windows Phone devices. Unless it’s too short, it’ll be the only cable you really need to bring along. It was the only one I brought with me on the trip and it never once let me down.
