Ahhh, sometimes it’s wonderful when worlds collide. J. J. Abrams and Simon Pegg, director of and star of Abrams’ Star Trek films, respectively, here discuss the new Star Wars film that Abrams will be directing in the near future.
It’s a fascinating look at two examples of shared fandom between franchises that have had a long reputation as being at odds with one another. As a life-long fan of both franchises, it’s enough to warm my heart. I do feel I should warn you though; towards the end of the short video, Pegg does offer a potential spoiler about the name* of the new film.
The video was released by Sky Films, and apparently is an excerpt from an interview they were doing on the upcoming Star Trek Into Darkness film. Do you feel as I do, that it’s only fine and natural to be loyal to both franchises? Or do you subscribe to “Star ____ is WAY better than Star ____!” instead? Let us know in the comments!
*Not really. He was kidding. I hope.
The first reboot movie was not too impressive, story wise. So I hope that in the upcoming movie Abrams is able to capture that what makes Star Trek different from (say) Star Wars. Otherwise it would be a bad omen for the next Star Wars movie; chances are he won’t be able to capture its essence either. We know that he can do great visuals, but can he tell a story. (The remark about not getting Star Trek does not make me hopeful.)
That said, I’ll be watching both movies, each appealing within their own story universe.
Oops! LOL!
Make that they ASSumed that if they just ATTACHED the Star Trek name to it that……..
anytime they want a REAL Star Trek movie they can let me know! I notice I am largely ignored on this point while some simpleton starts mocking the rest of my comments. WHY?!
Because while there ARE many delusional writers, actors, singers etc out there, EVERY ONCE IN AWHILE there comes someone whose boasting is completely WARRANTED! And THAT scares those in charge!
They make up a bunch of bullcrap about how no one wanted anymore of the old Star Trek which of course a bold faced lie! They ASSume that if they just attack the Star Trek name to something, then ALL of the Star Trek fans will turn out! WRONG!!!!! While it’s true some do go for ANYTHING Star Trek MOST OF US will ONLY turn out for Star Trek movies that are WELL-DONE! And NO! Star Trek the Next Generations movies #3 & #4 were NOT well done they were HORRIBLE!
And YES! I CAN DO BETTER! By using INFORMATION supplied in the vastly superior Classic Star Trek as well as in Star Trek the Next Generation and some from Voyager I have created a Star Trek Masterpiece 4 part movie that WOULD bring out the TRUE TREKKIES IN DROVES!
And NO! I am not delusional I SIMPLY KNOW MY FELLOW TREKKIES!
I know what they like and what they don’t like! Oh and I would still hate these movies even If I didn’t have these vastly superior movies! In FACT! I came up with 75% of these movies back in 1990!!!! And I thought Star Trek the Next Generations ‘Generations’ was Okay. And I LIKED ‘First Contact’ so Stick a sock in it liars.
It would be a very complex and ENTERTAINING movie! Oh and for the record I have studied screenplay writing for 20 yrs! I do know HOW to write!
The Movie would have action, adventure, New aliens, old aliens, Comedy, Romance, and Mystery. It will have elements from the old series but they are used as spring boards to create new and exciting stories. So it can appeal to the old die-hard fans WHILE having elements that new comers can enjoy. They can easily follow along so long as they bear in mind that there are hidden elements and things that can have dual meanings. Just saying.
Again! I know the REAL SCIENCE FICTION FAN! They ARE NOT easily amused the way Dreckies are. They require a story that makes them think a little while they are being entertained. And yes, it WOULD cost a pretty penny, especially the guest stars I have in mind for the secondary characters. And no! It would not be “Stunt” casting (if this were to happen. I know, Paramount hates intelligent entertaining movies lol) they are actually perfect for the role. Besides, I put myself in a good role (big surprise but I can act. I did take acting lessons in college thank you and received lots of compliments from the teachers as well as from fellow students) but a semi-retired Pro-Wrestler who is very acrobatic. I have tailored the role to his style of “acting”. lol
And the villain would be familiar. It’s just that even the die-hard fans (Hopefully) wouldn’t know it until Part 3. And Part 4 is similar to Star Trek Four The Voyage Home IN THAT it WOULD BE an easy romp for the most part with ALL of the remaining questions answered, including the biggest one of all. WHY?!
Oh well. Again, no one seems to want to take me up on this. I can only conclude it is due to cowardice.
Having Spock just show up at the end and JUST HAND Kirk ALL of the answers is THE WORST TYPE OF STORY TELLING FOR ANY GENRE!
That goes against Screenwriting Rule #1 DON’T BACK YOUR CHARACTERS INTO A CORNER THEY CAN’T GET OUT OF ON THEIR OWN!
Or at least don’t bring in someone out of nowhere at the last minute to “Save the Day”. BAD BAD BAD WRITING!
In fact that garbage that spewed from Abrams rear-end is NOT Star Trek BUT rather Star Dreck!
And the low-life fans of this simpleton rubbish are NOT NOW NOR WILL THEY EVER BE TREKKIES!
Paramount DID NOT create Trekkies, the REAL FANS OF STAR TREK did! So we and We ALONE can determine who is and who isn’t a Real Trekkie! Those fans of this Dreck are Dreckies! That is all they are and that is all they will ever be! This includes FORMER Trekkies.
In order to be a Real Trekkie one must obey rule #1! LOYALTY! something those who embrace this garbage do not have! They are traitors to Gene Roddenberry!
Oh and don’t bother lying about his comment in an interview in which he (SORT OF) said he wanted someone else to do a reboot!
SEE, I HAVE that interview and he CALLED STAR TREK THE NEXT GENERATION A “REBOOT!” So he didn’t REALLY mean a reboot he wanted newer and fresher SPIN-OFFS of his ORIGINAL SERIES! So those claiming this pukish garbage is what he wanted are nothing short of pathological liars.
But all of these movies are nothing but a joke! appealing to simpletons!
The J.J Abrams Star Trek = EPIC FAILURE!
Yes, it made more money at first! BUT, in the long run it was and is a failure.
Now compare that with the Star Trek Television series. It inspired the fans to go out and create clubs, charities, become scientists, astronauts, teachers, engineers!
What has this Star Dreck inspired?! NOTHING! Not a darn thing! Not even a tv series! That’s because Abrams is nothing but a flash in the pan hack. Some find it entertaining for a nano-second but then it is just as quickly forgotten!
Comparing that hack to Spielberg is a massive insult to Spielberg.
Abrams has no business being anywhere near Star Trek. His take STINKS! It is boring, vulgar, stupid, inaccurate, and the characters are basically nothing but cardboard cut-offs.
J.J. is the worst thing to happen to Star Trek and may not be for Star Wars only time will tell. There’s no “intelligence” to his writing/directorship. The dialogue he allows for Star Trek is complete trash, similar to Transformers, just filler for the next explosion or skin shot or lens flare or eye-candy. He’s a cash-cow and CBS/Paramount love him for that. There’s nothing original about him, he only slightly changes something to call it his own. Please insert your own comparisons for Alias (La Femme Nikita), Fringe (X-Files especially during it’s 1st Season), Cloverfield (Godzilla meets Blair Witch Project), Lost (The Prisoner [from the 1960’s] meets Gilligans Island), Alcatraz (4400 in prison), Revolution (Falling Skies without Aliens), etc… The guys a hack and wished people would realize this obvious trend.
Amen brother! Jar Jar “Bloodsucker” Abrams.
