You remember those horror movies where the monster comes back after you’re sure you’ve seen the last of him? Well, that’s been T-Mobile in 2013. Instead of a machete to the head, the Un-Carrier (no relation tot he undead), keeps coming back and doing something that turns the US mobile world on its head. This time, they’re revolutionizing how you use tablets and giving you a free gift in the process.
Yes, I did say free, and we’ll get to this in a second. First off, the timing of this announcement wasn’t by accident. It was meant to coincide with yesterday’s iPad announcement. No better timing than right after the refresh of the world’s most popular tablet. Yes, T-Mobile will now carry the iPad, both the Air and the two variants of the Mini. The same payment plan that they offer on their phones will be available on your iPad.
That’s not the interesting part, it’s the new tablet plans. Let’s say you’re primarily in an office or home office on Wi-Fi. You need it on cellular during the times you leave the office though. T-Mobile is giving you 200mb of free data for life and you don’t even have to be a T-Mobile customer to get it. This is a major carrier getting into the FreedomPop game. If you want more data than that, its starts at 500mb for $10/mo and 2GB increments for every $10 more after that. There are also daily and weekly plans that could be very popular with travelers coming to the US with their GSM/LTE tablets. Its $5 for a daily pass with unlimited HSPA+ data and 500mb of LTE. The week will give you 1GB of LTE and unlimited HSPA+ for $10. Hopefully, corresponding weekly voice and data plans for smartphones will be on their way.
Between free data and the daily/monthly plans, T-Mobile keeps getting more interesting. T-Mobile was a carrier that had nothing to lose and is making the best out of it with bold moves. Hopefully the rest of the industry will follow. What do you guys think? Be sure to leave us a comment.
