Tell a Joke, Win a Drobo!

June 22, 2013 by John P.

Drobo-5NHey gang, as Norm, Kien and I drive across the country today it can get a little boring. So we’ve got a deal for you! If you’ll help keep us entertained, we’ll help keep you entertained WITH A NEW DROBO 5N!

We’ll be giving away one brand new, shiny Drobo 5N on Wednesday June 26, 2013, and we’ll announce the winner during our live broadcast from CE Week in New York. You don’t have to be listenting to win, but we sure would like to have you watching as we do LIVE coverage and interviews from the show floor!

Here’s all you need to do to enter to win:

  1. We’re doing this thing exclusively on G+, so make sure you have me in one of your Circles! ==> http://google.com/+JohnP
  2. Publicly SHARE this post I put out asking people to tell us a joke!
  3. TELL A JOKE! But make sure you do it on that Google+ post!

RULES

  1. You’ll need to fill out a form related to the tax situation if you win! That’s a price worth paying, right?
  2. You do need to be a real human. Sorry, no bovine, equine, or alien entries please. Well, I might make an exception for a hot alien chick.
  3. You can tell as many jokes as you want. We’re still only picking the ONE best joke to win!
  4. Since Google+ has a 500 comment limit, if we fill up one post we’ll start another and continue the joke telling there. We’ll keep doing this as many times as necessary until we do the giveaway. Keep an eye out for new joke threads, and we’ll share links on this contest page too.
  5. No racist, hateful, or extremely offensive jokes please. Those will be deleted, which means you obviously won’t win for posting them.

I think this is going to be fun for all, plus one of you is going to get an awesome new Drobo 5N! Oh, and this giveaway is open to anyone, anywhere on Earth! So tell us your BEST joke! We’ll be readin’ them!

Any questions? Drop them in the comments below and we’ll answer as soon as we can.

How much is Drobo paying you for all this marketing John?

I own the Drobo FS and have had endless issues with it constantly rebuilding the array before allowing me to replace a faulty drive (even with dual disk redundancy). I then have to wait 2-3 weeks to rebuild only 3TB of data, then replace the “faulty” drive and now I wait another 2-3 weeks. This is putting unnessecary strain on the ramaining drives and I’ve lost 3 drives in the span of 4 months. Ridiculous.

I’ve had it with this BeyondRaid rubbish. I will only buy Synology from here on… once I’ve backed up this piece of rubbish I’m going to upload a vid to youtube of me smashing this piece of crap on the pavement.

Well first of all Drobo is indeed a sponsor of the show. Which I guess you know since you’re bringing that up right? I’m assuming your question is rhetorical and not real…

As far as your FS is concerned, that is an old model. And although we also have one that we used for years and years, at some point gear gets old. How long have you had it? We recommend replacing equipment that stays on constantly every 3 years… maybe 4 max. It wouldn’t matter if it was a Drobo, Synology, QNAP, or any other brand if it’s been running for 8,700 hours per year for a number of years its going to end up wearing out.

Even things like the dirty power coming out of the wall will tear down equipment. (I also recommend running all your sensitive electronics through a power conditioner to increase life span). There are a lot of things which could cause your machine to be finicky that are environmental, and switching brands won’t cure you of those variables.

I’m not telling you not to make the switch. We’ve got a wide variety of brands of equipment, and they are all good for different things. But I would caution you about giving up on Drobo based on one old piece of gear. The new 5N which replaces the FS is a MUCH better machine. 2-3 times faster, runs apps, etc. And you should be able to just take your disks and pop them in it without having to transfer data. Just something to consider.
