We’ve Moved Into the Geek House!

July 3, 2014 by giovanni

Big news! We’ve moved into the Geek House and have started setting things up!

Last Look at the Old Office

Before we get to the new place, let’s take one last tour around the old office, where everything’s now packed up. We moved into this place in April of 2011, and it was a good home for us, but we got to a point where we really needed to grow in ways we couldn’t here. On to bigger and better things!

Moved In!

This week we FINALLY got our Certificate of Occupancy, which allows us to officially start working in the new Geek House. We were allowed to move stuff into the building, and get it ready, but we weren’t allowed to actually start doing our daily work here until we got our CO.

Our Launch Party

We’re going to be having a party to celebrate the new place on August 1 – unfortunately we can’t invite everyone (the fire marshall would shut us down) but all Patrons are invited, and we will be live streaming it to all of you, wherever you are! We’ll have our normal Friday episode of Geek Beat Live, at 3 PM Central, 4 PM eastern time, then when that ends, we’ll just leave the cameras on and move right into the party.

A Quick Tour

As we walk through the building you can see our motion activated lights (to save power when no one is in an area) and our kitchen is now mostly finished. The Visitor Wall of Fame is going to be going up in our main hallway, where everyone will be able to see it. And we’re very excited about our new Chatsworth server racks, those will be moved into our data center very soon.

The last touches on the black paint in that data center are being finished off, and we’ve now got our massive data connection from Time Warner switched on and working! No more bandwidth issues! We have our Edge Router Pro from Ubiquiti Networks installed and we’ll be testing it out along with our super fast connection.

One of the quiet rooms already has a couch in it, and we’re getting all of our personal offices set up as well. We even have our Editor-In-Chief Dave Peterson set up and joining us from Seattle via the Kubi from Revolve Robotics. We’re soon going to be getting our UpDesks, and we’re thinking about what kinds of other furniture (like chairs) will go well with them.

In John’s office he has a needlepoint of lyrics from one of his favorite songs (the Humpty Dance) that his dad made for him, and speaking of music we’re also very excited to have awesome speakers from KEF all over the building. We will have amazing sound in the Geek House!

We call our control room where all the cool gear from NewTek lives “Nelsonville” for our friend and TriCaster guru Philip Nelson. That will be up and running soon. And the final stop on our tour is the warehouse area where we’ll be building all the sets we’ll use, both for daily shows and Geek Beat Live, as well as the massive cyclorama wall.

This adventure is only just beginning, so stay tuned!

Congrats on the sweet new building! Really cool and love all the planning that you put into this. The videos documenting the progress have been awesome, too.

But a guitar in the quiet room??? That doesn’t seem right. 😉

Please be sure to test the EdgeMax Pro with the v1.5 firmware. I know, no brainer, but big improvements in this release. It is likely not the version on the HW out-of-the-box.

Thanks! Congrats on the new location!
