No, this isn’t a rehash of John P’s post, exactly 1 month ago. BlackBerry is really trying again with the BBM launch today for iOS and Android. This time they hope to get it right and correct the mistakes of the September launch. I’ll tell you all the details and where you can get it. With that, Take 2…
Last month’s aborted release was exceptionally popular for the otherwise ailing company. According the today’s blog post by BBM unit head Andrew Bocking, 1 million Android users downloaded the pre-release version that lead to the shutdown and another 1 million were downloaded on what I would presume to be jailbroken iPhones. If they were sideloaded as Bocking claims, that would have to be the case. Another 6 million users signed up for information at BBM.com. BBM’s reputation as a top-notch communications tool as apparently preceded it to the dominant mobile platforms.
Where to Download BBM for Android and iOS
So how do you get it? First off, Blackberry is strongly suggesting that you watch BBM.com for official links. Given the prerelease app that started this mess and the army of fakes on the Google Play story, this is an understandable and prudent move. Second, if you were one of the six million to sign up for info, you get to go to the front of the line. In fact, for these users there is no line. As soon as the app launches, you get to register and use it. Everyone else will be part of a rollout that will occur as they are able to add capacity.
We’ll have the links up on this post as soon Blackberry launches later today (or tomorrow depending on where you are), just as soon as we have them. If this doesn’t go as planned and there has to be a third act to this play, we’ll tell you about that too. Keep your eyes on this post and on GeekBeat.TV.
