Wi-Fi Light Bulbs, the Future of Interior Illumination?

October 24, 2012 by Catherine Faas

As technology continues to progress at a head-spinning rate, we’re often confronted with products that inspire us to scratch our heads rather than reach for our wallets. But every once in a while, we stumble across a new tech product that doesn’t just make sense – it could make your life a lot better. Wi-Fi light bulbs are one of those “a-ha” products.

Greenwave Lighting

GreenWave Reality Connected Lighting Solution

The GreenWave Reality Connected Lighting Solution is designed to make adding highly- efficient lighting to your home a breeze. All you do is screw in the GreenWave bulbs, plug in a small gateway device to your existing wireless router, and run through a simple setup on your iOS or Android device. That’s it. No expensive re-wiring costs. GreenWave guarantees that its LED bulbs should fit into any standard socket.

Now comes the fun part – controlling them. You can do so by individual bulb or as a set right from your phone or tablet using a corresponding app. Every bulb has an individual IP address, which makes this possible.

Reviews

First reviews of the bulbs suggest that the bulbs give off a 2700K glow similar in colour to incandescent bulbs. They retain this pleasing colour when dimmed. For those of you that are energy-conscious, the bulbs are Energy Star Certified, and consume only a tiny fraction of incandescent bulbs.

The LED bulbs are quite durable and should last for many years.

Though they aren’t the prettiest bare bulbs (the top of the bulb is a disc that doesn’t light up), they are not as unappealing as other similar options out there. You may ask professionals such as https://aardvark-electric.com/ to help you install lighting fixtures like these.

The app works wonderfully on iOS devices, and it works okay on Android devices. To be fair, the Android version of the app is still in beta, and will improve once officially launched.

Pricing

A representative from GreenWave Reality says the full set  (four bulbs, the router, the remote control) will cost just under $200, with each individual bulb costing $20.

Yes, yes, yes. Anything that saves energy, takes advantage of my iOS device and fools would-be thieves is the thing for me. And the added advantage of freaking out my kids— I’m all over it!. I’m all about trying to get these bulbs ASAP!
