For the last year or so, rumors have swirled about a YouTube subscription music service. The rumors persisted even after the launch of parent company Google’s Play Music All Access. Now it has come to fruition in the form of YouTube Music Key. Let’s take a look at what this music service is all about.
What sets Music Key apart is that its based on music videos. YouTube gives you access to all of them, completely advertisement free. You can also download them for offline viewing and listen to the music in the background. Access will come via updated versions of the YouTube mobile apps and web interface with a dedicated section for music.
Then there’s that issue where it’s competing with a sister service. It’s actually not. YouTube Music Key also includes a concurrent subscription to Google Play Music all access. It gives you access to not only YouTube’s library, but also 30+ million audio songs. That makes it a much more compelling service, especially at the $7.99 introductory price. That’ll go up to $9.99 at a later date. That’s the same exact price as the Google Play product that it also includes.
